Gerald is this an official Hub comp or just by Hubbers for Hubbers?

Unofficially the official comp, now in its 8th year (maybe 9th). It has been a comp for hubbers only with the support from admin most of the time

Also, if possible, some kind of Idiots Guide to Fantasy Cycling. Never done this before, but it looks like a ton of fun. A perfect way to recover from a back operation!!

I straight out sucked (actually my riders sucked) last year. I'll be in again after just missing out on a podium spot on the Giro comp.

Under the new scoring for 2014 you would have improved by 24 places, unlike me I dropped from 34 to 75.

Only the 4 jersey wearers and aggressive rider categories is one rider scores.

Daily stage, overall (yellow), green, polka dot and white standings at the end of each day also have points for each rider listed. In other words, stages 1-3 are flat so the chances of points being scored in the polka dot category will be limited to one or two riders. As soon as the mountain stages start, more and more riders will score points.

I'll post examples closer to the weekend.

Perfect, thanks! Hopefully when you post some examples it'll be crystal clear.

The scoring has been updated as follows:

Daily stage

  • Daily stage results will count 64.1% of the total score;
  • Every rider that crosses the finish line will score a point - starting from 19.8 (1st place) and decreasing by 0.1 until 198th place;
  • Every stage will have a maximum score of 19.8 points, but as riders drop out the minimum scores matches the number of riders, eg. 5 riders drop out, resulting in 193 crossing the line - the minimum points is 0.5 and not 0.1;

Jersey Classification

  • After each day of racing, the classifications are updated, placing each rider into numerical order:
    • General Classification (Yellow);
    • Sprint Classification (Green);
    • KOM Classification (Polka Dot);
    • Young Riders Classifiaction (White Jersey).

    [*]Points are awarded for each rider's position in each of these classifications. Only those riders that appear on the classification will be awarded points:

    • Yellow (everyone qualifies);
    • Green (usually top 25 on flat sprints, intermediate sprints, etc.);
    • Polka Dot (similar to Green, but only for mountain stages);
    • White (only riders under the age of 25).

    [*]Bear the above in mind when selecting a team - you could select a team that favours the GC (Yellow) and sacrifice the other competitions, or you could opt for a combination of sprinters and climbers, or sprinter and GC. That's what makes this a fantasy competition - it's your choice.

    [*]3.2% of the points are allocated to each of the classifications (12.8%). The daily points are also awarded in a sliding scale according to position on each classification.

Jersey Holders

  • Bonus points are awarded if your rider is the holder of each of the 4 classification jerseys - 2 points per jersey per day (0.3% of the total);
  • If you rider hold more than one jersey they will score the points, and NOT THE RIDER physically wearing the jersey on the stage;

Daily Aggressive Rider

  • Each day, the Tour announces who was the most aggressive (combative) rider. If one of your 9 riders is selected on any day, you will score 20 points per day (0.6% of the total).

Final Classification at end of Tour

  • At the end of the Tour, once the final classifications have been done, you will score points based on your rider's final position on each classification:
    • Overall GC (Yellow);
    • Sprinters (Green);
    • KOM (Polka Dot);
    • White (Young Rider).

    [*]Each classification will contribute 5.4% per category, based on the same sliding scale used on the daily classifications (21.5% of the total). Points start at 32.432 and decrease by 0.151 per place until the final place.

    [*]The final score is for the OVERALL COMBATIVE rider (the most aggressive as determined by the race organisers. If your rider is awarded this title, you will score 396 points (0.6% of the total).

Other basic rules

  • There is no limit on which riders you choose;
  • No substitutions allowed - let's hope there aren't any repeats of this year's Giro and the 2010 Tour, with so many crashes.
  • Amendments may be made before the start of the Tour - hopefully all queries will be resolved before July 5th.

How would I have compared?

Thanks for taking the time to arrange this all!!! Kudo's!

Regarding the changes in positions, the big difference was for riders that didn't fall within the scoring parameters used in previous years. Usually it was the top 5, top 10 places on each stage, and then the top 3 in the classifications.

Now that every rider scores points, it make some big changes for some (up and down) and some smaller changes for the majority.

The more detail, the more accurate the results but also a bucket load of work to setup.

Thanks a lot for the explanations Gerald! Just a few questions to satisfy my inquisitive mind:

At the end of the Tour, am I correct in saying that the overall winner is awarded an extra 32.432 points, whereas the most combative rider for the Tour is awarded an extra 396 points?

For the daily jersey classifications, if the points go something like 1, 0.995, 0.99, 0.985..., etc., what happens if there are only, say, 50 riders in the young jersey classification, for example? Will the points still go 1, 0.995, 0.99, 0.985..., etc., with just a higher minimum, or will they be higher for each participating rider, i.e. 4.00, 3.95, 3.9..., etc.?

Yes, the winner only gets 32.432 points for yellow but will most likely also be high up in the KOM classification.

Then also the green classification should they be in the front of the group at "high risk" stages.

The most aggressive sounds a lot but it's a 1 in 198 chance of being the right selection. Call it a carrot to dangle as a wild card rider.

Regarding the white jersey, in 2013 there were only 50 riders, and most of them weren't picked by the hubbers, so the scoring in this category will be probably be limited to the top 10 riders - maybe I'm wrong.

All the jersey classifications have the same weighting, but not all will have the same minimum.
