As a gym junkie for the last 15 years, I dont really like crossfit. Weight training will make you strong and give you shape, you can then go further and focus on specific muscle groups that need xtra attention. Also with weight training you can lift heavy for big gains or lift lighter weights if you dont want to look like Johnny Bravo. I am doing a lot of leg excercises currently, because it is helping my cycling a great deal. I rode my first Argus 2 years ago having cycled for only a week prior, doing just leg excercises in under 5 hours.

If you have shape and want to lose some fat, crossfit is great. If you are fat and need to shed some pounds its also great. I dont see it helping your cycling, unless you focus on the same muscles you use for cycling. My 2c

To understand Crossfit one need to focus on two concepts......work conditioning and work hardening. Work conditioning focus on teaching and training the correct systems (muscles) to do the work safely, effectively and efficiently. Work hardening indicates increasing the capacity to do the work (fitness). IOW, although you can move a serious amount of weight with a clean-and-press, you might not be doing it safely, effectively or efficiently......and this is where the problem lies. Even a simple activity such as pull-ups can lead to straining some of the rotator-cuff muscles in the shoulder joint. So although Crossfit has some advantages, a structured cycling specific RESISTANCE training program (performed in a gymnasium) might be more advantageous.

Informal discussions on this topic with medical specialists (usually during those long marathon races in order to focus on something else) have confirmed that Crossfit related injuries are a good stream of constant income.....

All the usual Crossfit haters............

If you go to a reputable box ....

Hold the phone, are you telling me the guy who runs a crossfit club is called a box?(or is it the name of the actual building).

If it's the former(please, universe, let it be) then what do they call it on the otherside of the boerewors curtain?

LOL. No, it's the name of the premises. Like dojo, gym, etc etc. You go do crossfit at the Box. Cos generally, that's all you need, and they're traditionally found in warehouses, which are box-shaped

I have experience with both, and although there is no such thing as the "wrong exercise", there are pro's to both.

Gym will give you good power with some extra bulk if you really start to push some big weights.

Crossfit will be fun to do, if you can keep good from and motivation, as you can loaf as soon as the trainer turns his / her back on you. The warrior challenge will become your measuring stick of performance.

I would rather look at getting a personal trainer that specializes in Plyometrics - as you really want to get that real explosive power vs big and bulky / warrior physique.

Unless you are into multi sport, then crossfit - just watch the form! Well, watch the form in the gym too!
