We wandered from our trail and rode a section of the Cross Country route today....put on the gas to make a steep little climb, ramped over the top, to find a nasty very steep descent on the otherside with no chance to chicken out. Made it just.....had such a jol we ended up doing our loop twice. Only on the second round did I notice all the black diamond signs.....A little late!

That's why we do Enduros. :D

Couldn't have said it any better!

I think out of all the enduro's I did thus far. (Simonsberg, jonkers, helderberg, Delvera) simonsberg was the least technical and Jonkers ridden blind was the most technical for me. Delvera ridden blind was also very technical, but I'm leaning more towards 'endurance'.

Here is a bit of tech that can be mastered. Had to remove a rear der, remove a section of mangled chain and do a S/S conversion with a very painfull left hand. Then climb and descent a further 600m.

So humble....only a few sentences. Come one, give a little more info and boast about your achievement. Great respect for a person who can still manage to sort things out, even if the universe throws rocks at you. Well done.

Today's Hakahana trail seeker was as technical as I would like to ride .I walked a lot and made it safely home .I did see some exceptional descending skills from youngsters and some very brave adults that I am sure do not need their full functioning body to earn a living .I am very impressed with my new XTR brakes .I had no problem stopping and controlling my 100kg frame down those treacherous descents .My old avid,s would have screamed and boiled in the same situation

Long story. It will sound like excuses. My point is that I realised today that bike maintenance on trail is also something one must learn and maybe even practise. It may save or loose more time than riding down cliffs. For the second time in three years I completely mangled a rear derailleur a long way from home. The first time I had to walk to civilisation and bum a lift. This time I knew what to do and put my bike into 3rd gear (S/S) and rode home. A skill that gave me a lot of pleasure. My hand and arm looks like I played a game in the old Carlton League. Being bashed up and under stress as well as tired is not the time to figure it out. Also add some basic bike maintenence courses/ vids to your cycling education.

And that is exactly it! If the name says Enduro I know that I am way out of my league. Right or wrong it has evolved so that XCM is now seen by the middle of the bunch as endurence events with some basic tech. I find the W2W (at B bunch pace) as tech as needed to have fun and not to feel like a dirtroad event. Naturaly an event organiser can put in what he or she wants to but be aware that the majority of riders (read "the paying crowd") will at least expect a warning that the route (new to them) has a bit of tech ahead.

We have been working at Hakahana, building new trail and creating some technical obstacles which I reckon are beyond the capabilities of most riders. All these very tech areas will be well marked and we obviously have to build B and in some cases even C lines to cater for all skill levels. But we need to cater for experienced and skilled riders, even obstacles that will challenge good riders.

PS. You will be surprised what you can ride if you drop your saddle down and out of the way, even with a xc bike. ;)

If you want proper technical, enter the switchback series.

We have decided to create the toughest, roughest mountain bike series in our small world to reward those who love super technical, challenging, mother climbs and descents. The Switchback series is a chance to ride trail bikes on trails built for trail bikes.
