That isn't Kevin. The post states it's a fellow competitor.

Out of interest - where is the competitors number board?

could be one of many people - that is from pre twitter/fb days and the website isn't archived that far back! 2007 was the snowy year, so very likely that it's from then.

but it'as not Andy wonnacot or Earl wakefield

probably not tim james, hannele steyn kontze or lee john (they were too far ahead)

probably not xolani mtshali - don't think he had enough kit to fill a bag that much

not mike woolnough - he had a cannondale lefty in 2007

not andre britz - he did it on a rigid singlespeed in 2007

steven thomas rode quite a lot of the back end of the race with kevin, but as an experienced tourer i doubt he'd have such a big bag.

It is 2007. I mentioned to Kevin that I had come across some of my old emails from the Freedom Challenge of 2007 (the snowy one) and that he was mentioned. He said that he was a day behind the rider in the photo. 2007 was the worst snow conditions in the history of the race from what I can recall.

Here's the original newsletter email about the snow:

It would be remiss not to mention that today may be the day for that fatbike after all.

Although I am not sure it's much fun on the portages.

the combination of the two!

I'd say the mist foremost. As they would've arrived at the bottom the mist would've been arriving as reported from Tiffendel. They would've visually had the snow as a warning but the wind would be minimal at the start but fresh in the minds from leaving Vuvu...

Big group of riders have gone around Lehana's today on the Philipsrust route (old 4x4 route). They are making good time, but the nav on the descent can get tricky and with mist...........

wait, is that a different option than the macambala/naude's nek alternative?

Agree. On the photo Joyce sent me this morning from Vuvu one could clearly see the snow covered mountain with cloud cover on top. They were in delay mode at Vuvu then. I recall a talk by Ugene Nel a few years ago where he described a whiteout on top of Lehanas and them seeking shelter in a kraal at the time. I'll never forget his words "you can die out there" so I then made my peace with carrying a kg extra outer shell clothing for just such an instance. Personally to default to the much safer Mcambalala option is a no brainer if in doubt and today appears to be such a day. I'm guessing the day will be no less tough but at least it'll be a bit safer to navigate and to seek help should it be required. Best of luck to them. I see on the tracker they are moving slowly but sticking together, s sure sign conditions are very hard today.

yup. if you go lehanas you stuck with one option*. road route you can always get a lift if it gets dicey.

*the container, if you can get there. if you can get in. if you can get out.
