With that price calculation, anyone want to buy a full carbon Cannondale Flash 3 in excellent condition with XX parts and new Icon tubeless tires for R12000? It weighs 9,5kg

I always say when I'm selling something, my item, my price. Take it or leave it.

If my item is over priced, I probably don't really want to sell the item and I have to sit with it for a while longer.

Selling a second hand bike is NOT a good idea if:

1. You paid a LOT for it

2. You look after your bike

3. Maintain ALL working parts in impecable working order.

If you do all that, then keep your bike.

Example;

I own a Niner RIP9 well specced and looked after.

For my insurance, the insured value is R60 000 (example)

If I would have to sell this bike, I will be LUCKY if I get a buyer for R28 000, however to me, this bike is still worth the R60 000.

So, my advice, KEEP YOUR BIKE.

If you sell it because you "need the money now", chances are you should'nt have spent shat much on a bike in the first place.

RE % of original value, unfortunately, I think it is about 50% of the original purchace price.

Happy hoopin (and less bike selling :))

EDIT, spelling

Let me put my Bike to the test..

2011 Cannondale Carbon flash 29er 2

Carbon Lefty

X9 Gearing

FSA SLK Carbon Crank

Elixer CR brakes

Cost Price R37000.00 (yes they were affordable back then)

2012- 50% = R18500 ( I bought a set of Easton EA90XC wheels) +R8000

2013 – 10% for bike =R16650.00 and -50% for the wheels = R4000

2014 - 10% = R18585.00 (add them together as they are depreciating at the same rate.. )

I would sell my bike for about R18500.00

Do you guys think that is a fair price?

I know you aren't getting excited, some other guys have though.. the exact reason I started this thread was to see how others look at valuing bikes....

So give us an idea of what you would pay for the Merida ? Answer the question please.

I appreciate the point the OP is trying to get across and I for one find it helpful to have a BASELINE formula to determine whether or not the asking price is in the ballpark. Far more helpful than people whining that they can sell their bike for whatever price they think it is worth! Yes you can, no-one is stopping you, the OP is simply trying to establish a generalised OBJECTIVE way of determing reasonable ballpark value of a second hand bike - granted there will be tweaks here and there. Not that hard to comprehend surely!!

If you wanted to work it out like that you would have to lower the value of the extras as you wouldn't be selling the old wheels along with the new wheels

Read my valuation of my bike, I don't need to value someone else's, I havent seen it....

I would charge you about 5k to take it off your hands

Sure. But say for example you upgrade a part that is worth R6k for a part that is worth R8k you couldn't then say you have added R8k value to the bike.

We may not be able to be friends! You sound like that bike shop in New York that got Ike Tseng (Mr. Merida) started in the first place. Rui Costa would disagree with you!

Do not make the mistake of confusing purchase price with what a part is worth.

Here are the underlying factors according to the world of G

Mainstream brand (eg mid range Scott, Spesch or Giant) with everything in working order and properly serviced regularly:

((Purchase price (say R40k for 2014 bike) plus replacement value (say R50k for 2015 bike)) / 2 )*between 60% and 70% with a factor for all parts upgraded recently (i.e. as new) less 10% on reduced balance thereafter less a factor for falls and damage to the bike. So looking at around R27 000 to R31 500 as a base line price after year 1. By year 2 the replacement value would be say R55 k, so the formula would be:

((Purchase price (say R40k for 2014 bike) plus replacement value (say R55k for 2016 bike)) / 2 )*between 60% and 70% with a factor for all parts upgraded recently (i.e. as new) less 10% on reduced balance. So I am looking at R25 650 to R29 950.

At some point the bike value drops exponentially. This is usually when it is considered as outdated, i.e. new suspension design on new models, components are outdated (9spd vs 11spd) or a change in wheel size (26er vs 29er). At that point it would be much better to leave the bike in the driveway and claim that someone jumped the wall and stole it.

I've sold my bike for about 80% of the new price. I showed the buyer my invoice for buying the bike and he was happy paying what he did.

Whats the problem?

Why did you sell your bike?
