A bike was found in a similar way at the mainland CC. The thief went to the police to give an affidavit to say it's his bike.

Don't know what happened further

Why are Cash Converters not being a bit more proactive here? I understand they running a business, but clearly there's a problem with cycling gear, bikes etc They could easily report suspicious bikes as soon as they come through the door!!

They're but a pawn shop

Not part of their biz strategy

Once it's reported stolen you may not recover it without the cops present as far as I am aware so you must get them involved. Cash Crusaders will have a copy of the ID from the seller and most of these guys have sold many items to CC so they know them well... CC will help the cops to get the people as it is in their best interests - they claim ignorance, but they normally buy these bikes for around R2k which they have to know is considerably less than the real value (their entire existence is based on them knowing the real value of the goods). Put pressure on the cops to follow up on it and keep calling them until they actually do it - a lot of them are really good and will help you.

I recovered a stolen bike from Wynberg CC and they gave the bike back without any delay (carbon Niner with XX groupset - they'd paid R3200 for it). They had 3 pages of items they'd bought from the same guy and all at ridiculously low prices (basically all the stuff you would find if you were to clear out a few garages).

really?? I had some goods I was willing to let go, but not at the price they were willing to offer me so I packed it all up & went back home with it. So when the thief comes into the shop with a 30K bike & asks for 5k, he nor you will ever get that, you'll get whatever they feel they can sqeeze you for, go try it for yourself as an experiment if you think I'm taking bollocks.

Hi Everybody

Thanks for your support and apologies about not updating you all.

Once the bike was spotted I opened a case and got the police to accompany me to Mitchell's plain to collect the bike. It took a couple days as the police were not particularly knowledgable about the procedure for reclaiming stolen property.

We now have the seller's I.D., adress, number, and CCTV verification. He sold the bike to CC for R1500 who verified that he was the bike owner when he answered the question, "when and where did you buy the bike from?" with the answer "Bellville Cycles in 1998 when I was still riding for Spartans." Obviously there are some gaps in the CC buying verification procedure.

Nevertheless, the bike is home although technically on SAPS 13 loan until the case is closed.

Cheers

Cool stuff but the standout line there is "the police were not particularly knowledgable about the procedure for reclaiming stolen property"

That is hysterical...
