Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated, A bit off topic. Looking for a entry level race bike as well. Saw a RC3000 with 9 speed tiagra on it. Worth while bike for R2500? Still looks and rides smooth. Old bike obviously but in my mind would “last longer” than the mtb I bought in term of upgrading the race bike would not be necessary for a argus and burger tour?

Yeah, that's a reasonable price...

Bicycles are a great investment in all kind of ways: 1. Your sanity 2. Your health 3. The environment , just NOT a good financial investment  . Luckily money isn't everything!

True story

How serious are you about the Argus and Burger - If not too serious I would rather spend the R2500 on a better mtb and do the road stuff on a good mtb with slicks.

What type of off-road riding are you likely to do most often as there is quite a difference in off-road bikes.

(just a btw - how old are you?)

I've always bought very second hand bikes and upgraded as and when finances permited, but doing the sums it's quite clear that I would have saved money if I'd bought new (or very nearly new) in the first place.

My problem is that I just can't get my head around paying new (or nearly new) prices.

Stoopid is as stoopid does.

The key is to buy a 2hnd bike that's already upgraded to the tilt, like many 26ers are, guys just jumping over to the next best thing after spending a fortune over the yrs on the "old" 26er. For around R10-12k you can get a full sus 26er fully kitted that would probably have retailed for R30-40k when new. Plenty of them in the classifieds, it's ridiculous.

Guys are giving me a lot to think about here.

Not planning on winning, but want to stay clear of the back of the pack, so it would make sense having a descent mtb rather than two entry level ones. I am 29

You can keep well clear of the back on a mtb with slicks.

In fact some years ago a mtb was in the top 10 overall.

A mtb would not add more than 15min to your time.

Second Hand ,just make sure you know what you buy

Good point, hopefully you have enough experience or know someone who can come with.

Some okes do sell bikes only at the end of their life cycle, worn drivetrain and suspension, you'd be buying expensive looking but pretty useless heap. I've been caught before, taken to the cleaners, almost everything needed replacing.

But the next bike I knew better and I got a very fair deal, my stead is well looked after and still going like a champ after much use.

Hi all, I have pulled the trigger and sold the bike. Now I have some money burning a hole in my pocket. I have seen a few bikes, would like so opinions please.

I am looking to spend around R4k, but for the right bike I would go a bit higher. yes not much but I am sure it would be a higher spec bike than the Mongoose.

I am 177 so between a medium and large?

My opinion, the Merida TFS 800, good quality components and an all round good bike

PS: At 1.77m, medium frame

No - go for the Silverback Alpine. Fork is FAR better (Recon Silver Air vs a Merida branded Suntour XCR) and the rest of the parts are on par.

Although - the Merida is a medium, which is more your size. You'll be a bit stretched out on the Large, unless you swapped the stem out for a far shorter one (the one on there looks like a handlebar itself)

You're on the cusp of medium / large so it may actually work for you. But ito parts spec, the Silverback takes it. Smack a short stem (40 - 50mm) on there and it may be great for you.
