Hi Guys,

Myself and a friend are noobs in the world of Mountain biking. Many years ago I did quite a bit of Road cycling though. Something struck me the other day when we were cycling at the Red Barn. A much faster guy came flying past me on a "technical" bit, without announcing his intention.

This caused me to almost hit a tree. No Apology nothing! It would seem like the some of the Faster Guys (Not everyone - because allot of guys do announce their intentions) just don't seem to care about the slower ones.

From a roadie point of view, I have learnt to hold my line if someone announces, and I am also one of those guys that will move into the rough to let the quicker guys past if possible, so it is not a matter of me doing the wrong thing, I think there are a few guys that think they are bigger than the sport and lacks etiquette.

Just my 2c worth.

Keep peddaling :-0

I'm with you here. as the noob going slowly I'll always pull over and let people pass as i don't want to ruin anyone's fun - but if it's not safe IMO for me to do so then you'll have to wait - but also got a big fright this weekend riding the first time at Big Red Barn. Solo rider - I didn't hear him coming up - he passed in a safe place and a good few meters away from me but i got such a fright as i just suddenly heard a thrashing through the leaves.

Also another group of riders - first time i heard people screaming track - usually (in the east rand   ) ppl just saying hi - passing left / right !!! most noob friendly!!!

So does using the smoother line include walking up it? OP you did nothing wrong as such.

We are faced with unique problems in that fields are big, distances are mixed and not all entries are seeded.

Inevitably we end up with a faster rider overtaking a slower.

The done thing should be to notify someone you would like to overtake as early as possible and then let them give you a chance to pass. When given the chance do so quickly and safely. Thank the person for their assistance.

The problem with that, is ego and fear: Some are racing for time and not a place so they can better their seeding for future, others are newer to the scene but what ever the situation we should be aware that we are not the fastest and even on a fun ride people are pushing their personal limits or ability. So let us try and be courteous and allow faster riders the opportunity to pass safely instead of being roadblocks.

That being said as the faster rider we should know better not to "scare" a slower rider as we pass them. Give the necessary warning but be aware you may not have the chance immediately and that is when a little give is necessary for all the taking you will have or have had the whole race.

What I don't like is a queue of us all trying to through and a "faster" rider pushes to the front. That assumption has no place especially when we are all off our bikes waiting. You will get some choice comments from the those waiting in line.
