So i've noticed my free hub isn't spinning as freely as it should, I took it apart this weekend, removing the bearings and cleaning everything and noticed there is some sort of pitting inside the "chamber" (don't know the correct terminology) that the bearings are running in/against.

I've lubed everything up and put everything back in to just check if it made any difference. It did spin a bit better but not 100%, I then also noticed that when spinning my back wheel, it would spin freely but occasionally engage and move the peddals forward a little.

So for the people out there in the know, I want to send my wheel in for a service, is this just going to be a single service or a whole new hub and wheel rebuild?

What am I looking at price wise?

I speak under correction but it is usually better just to replace free hub.

If it is pitted there is not much you can do and you would replace the ball bearings as they would also be worn.

It must have taken some time to do the service tooooo many little ball bearings.

Yeah...

Serviced mine the other day as it was sounding and feeling a bit rof, stripped it down, cleaned it and replaced bearings, lots of little shards of metal come out of it but luckily no pitting. Seems to be working fine now, so not sure where the shards came from.

If the pedals turn while the wheel should be freely spinning it could be that the bearings are catching and hence turning the cassette..Did you perhaps not over tighten it when reassembling?

If the pitting is on the race (polished looking section that the bearings roll on) you will need to replace the hub as it keep eating any new ball bearings you put in and eventually totally die on you. Don't think the Shimano ones are too pricey..

Shimano freehubs are cheap as chips. If the races are pitted just replace, but add the new one to your hub service schedule from now on. It's a fiddly job, but it'll last forever if it's done regularly.

Yeah...

Shimano freehub = dustbin. XT freehub body not easy to come buy. I had to replace my xt freehub body a while ago as it did the same as Veonix's above, waited just over a month, no body had, not even coolheat. Im shoping for different hubs at the moment.

I think they've got stock in again - Shimano produced a bad batch a while back so all their stock went to warranties. Hopefully the new ones are back up to scratch - I've had my XT freehub (765) for many years and it's still hundreds.

So if you have a M775 would it be advisable to buy a spare one just in case?

For the R 350 odd it'll cost you, it's worth having a backup. Beats potentially begging wheels off your mates on a Saturday evening.
