Jens Voigt began his career as a skinny German kid from the east side of the wall. He ends it as a cycling icon known simply by his first name, a fierce competitor famous for mercilessly punishing those who would test themselves at the same start line. As Jens puts it, "I get paid to make other people suffer."

Behind that fearsome reputation stands an affable, approachable guy loved by fans and the peloton alike. Even the victims of his relentless attacks are sorry to see him retire—but after 17 years in the saddle, the oldest man in the pro peloton has earned a rest.

We rode shotgun as Jens powered through his last professional race, the 2014 US Pro Challenge. Bravo, Jens. You'll be a tough act to follow.

Watts/kg really does not matter. What matters is watts/drag where the drag is the combination of mechanical resistance and air resistance.

Watts/kg only matters when you are climbing, which is normally the important thing for road races because this is where time gaps are made/lost.

I would say absolute power matters? It should be easier to calculate than on the road, because there's no wind, except his own.

Edit,

The official formula for Power (in watts) is below with the legend below that - from Wiki.

P = g.m.Vg (K1 + s) + K2.Va^2.Vg

g = earth's gravity

Vg = ground speed (m/s)

m = rider mass (kg)

s = grade (m/m)

Va = rider's speed through the air (m/s)

K1 = lumped constant for all frictional losses (tires, bearings, chain)

K2 = lumped constant for aerodynamic drag (kg/m)

Lekker playlist except for that Brian Adams number.

" I have no illusion to keep the record once Fabian and other specialists start having a go. But I kind of like the idea of telling me grand children about it, when they sit on my lap when I’m 75"

I love that line.
