A mate of mine got an mtb on Friday and we're taking him for a short leg stretcher tomorrow. My first mtb ride was on the spruit and was a great start so wanted to do the same for my mate.

Nf has also been suggested though. I've never ridden there. Is it a good place to start? Short, non technical routes for a first ride.

I vote NF. On the spruit while you can keep to the main lines there's so much traffic from other users, it's (for me at least ) quite daunting. At northerns you can do an easy 10-12km mostly jeep track and if you're feeling it, duck off onto other sections

For a first timer, NF or modderfontein or Rietspruit. Many first timers get hurt on the spruit, dog walkers, road crossings, other riders, Ss and Strava nuts, etc etc....

I rate NF. There's plenty noobs and at least you get a feel for riding a bike in the great out doors.

I would go to Modderfontein.

Why?

My vote is for reitvlei. The spruit is still very much a city route with the road crossings and dogs and such. Northernfarms requires a great deal of pedaling to get to the cool stuff (which is amazing actually). At least from what I've seen. At reitvlei you can experience a great piece of single track within 11 short kms. If I'd started at northern farms it probably would have been a struggle and the spruit is just not really that scenic with more jeep track than I'd like. If I was trying to get someone hooked reitvlei is where I'd take them and frankly if they don't have a good time there then maybe they should be a road cyclist. Nothing wrong with that; honestly the single track there is non threatening but still lots of fun. Just stay off the proper blue.

**** that. Strait into the deep end for the noob. Take him to hakahana. The rinkals will help him decide quickly weather or not this glorious sport is for him. Hahahaha

Why?

No particular reason I personally just find Modderfontein a nice venue to ride at. I prefer it to Northern Farms. Well marked etc.
