We are planning a MTB bridge over a pedestrian walkway. (See attached photo). The approach is from the far side. The retaining wall is 80 cm high. We are thinking that the lowest point of the bridge should be about 2m above the walkway This is for the Two River event on 20 September in Bothaville. What should the approach and departure angle for the bridge be, to be first off all safe, and secondly rideable by the majority of the field? Taking into account that there will be quite a lot of novices as we are offering 12, 25, 40 and 65 km. Any input from anyone who has planned something like this would be appreciated.

Is this going to be a permanent or temp construction?

If permanent I would highly recommend you appoint a structural engineer to the do the design work .... you don't want something to go wrong with lots of people around and they get hurt!

If temporary a structure using scaffolding should suffice, and the guys who erect the scaffolding usually have a resident engineer who would certify the works. Again ... you don't want people getting hurt.

Balustrade / Side Rail is legally meant to be 1m in height.

Given that the persons are going to be on bicycles they will be higher and the possibility of going over a 1m balustrade is real. I would go min 1.2m.

The walkway below, if being used during the event should be min. 2.1m in clearance.

It would be removable, but re-usable for every year's race.

If you want most skill levels to be able to ride it then entry and departure angles of 30 degrees or less.

Isn't 30 degrees way to steep? Especially for the approach?

I was looking at you diagram and it helps that the entry is higher. So going up 1.5m vertical over 5m of ramp should be doable by most.
