So I fell at PWC today - Grade 3 AC dislocation. I am only seeing the ortho on Tuesday though.

Anyone had this before?

Prognosis? Surgery?

Time before I am functioning again?

1-4 months. How's the pain now? Will be a lot worse tomorrow. Try avoid surgery. Give Dr Greg Scrace a call. Brilliant chiro, will help with recovery

Not too bad if it's only dislocated. Torn is another story

Grade 3 is usually okay with conservative management.

Note your A/C is not your 'shoulder', and should provide a better prognosis than a true shoulder dislocation.

Good luck, keep us posted after Tuesday

Grade 3 AC joint separation is torn. Both the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments are torn.

From what I know (I'm not an ortho), grade III injuries are still managed conservatively (i.e rest, pain control and rehabilitation), with surgery reserved for uncontrolled pain or other complications.

Go see a good ortho and have a chat with him/her. My hope for you is that the doc who said its grade III got it wrong and that its not so bad. In the mean time, keep your arm in a sling and ice the injury.

At least 6 weeks off the bike. Had same Grade 111. Was told by Ortho that can live without surgery, surgery would be for cosmetic reasons........no big bump on shoulder. Also said some surgeries not successful.

Eesh. Thanks guys.

I had a pretty uncomfortable night, as I usually can't sleep on my other shoulder either due to a previous injury.

I have a list of 3 orthodox to see for opinions now.

My big worry is my weight lifting and gymnastic movements are now going to go back to zero.

Crossfit competition at the end of October is also out.

Grade 3 means at one ligament is torn off and the other is torn

No movement above your head recommended or stuff like pull-ups etc. ever unless you have it fixed they say

IF you can, Avoid surgery, it will heal up and should be ok.... I had a dislocation at the beginning of the year, (not from cycling), but to date, it's fine.... I do have the odd bit of pain now and then due to cold or wahetever causes it, but it is manageable without pain killers....

It goes away almost as instantaneously as it sets in...  :w00t:

I have full funticonality of the shoulder now, took a bit of a while but can do exactly what I could before the disoaction.

Rest well, heal up and all the best....

I don't think what he has is what you had..

OP seems to have a grade 3 shoulder separation...

I'm no where near the medical field so don't have much knowledge of the situation, i too had a a torn ligament/tendon which tore a piece of bone from the ball of the upper part of the arm... was painful but as soon the ball was placed back into the socket pain was subdued but still numb...

Try sleeping on your back up against some large pillows (sort of seated at 30 degrees) - and a rolled pillow between the shoulder blades. Keep the arm in a sling.

No really comfortable position for this though - hope you heal up well.

Haha, I did the same thing at PWC but was fortunate it was only a Grade 2. I also recommend finding a good physio on top of that. They really helped with mine in terms of rehab. I know a good practice in Bryanston, I can pm you details if you want?

Sorry to hear that, I did the same thing a few years ago and tried the route of no surgery. Unfortunately I had a grade 4 dislocation the ligaments are torn and my shoulder kept popping out while doing the smallest of things like putting on a T-shirt, It even popped out in my sleep.

Eventually I went for the Surgery and I've  never looked back. It was a long recovery ( 6 weeks in a sling and a few months of physio to get full range of movement and stability back )

It isn't the biggest op, from what I understand all they do is anchor the ligaments back to the bone with a few little key hole cuts. (I'm sure there's a better description)

4 Years down the line and my shoulder is stronger than its ever been.

I went to Dr Jaco Strobos at Wilgeheuwel and he did a great job, He has also done a bunch of friends shoulders (I have a motocross background).

Good luck with the recovery man.
