Continental MK Tyre leaking out of bead?

Fitted 2 x Continental Mountainking Tyres, 2.4 Non Tubeless on the front and 2.2 Tubeless at the back.

The 2.4 non-tubeless mounted tubeless without blinking, literally just put on the airline, no sealant in the tyre pumped up bead set, done. The 2.2 that's supposed to be tubeless was a biatch of note to get the bead to set, after much cursing it took and alls good.

But now the 2.4 that was so easy to mount is slowly leaking air out of the bead, all over the rim, tyre has sealant in, I pumped the tyre up hard, took it out the frame and held it laterally to the ground, swishing the sealant over the sidewall/bead area but no luck tyre still flat the next day.

What can I do, have seen many people moaning about continentals being a real problem to seal, first I've experienced a tyre not sealing all over the show at the bead even with 4bars of pressure in?

Yup, agreed, these tyres are infamous for this... real beeeetches, but once sorted they reward you. I use Stans only, but I'm sure others work too, and then leave on their sides on a large yoghurt tub, swisshing around every so often, then turning over to do the other side. Over time, if the Stans dries out, they can start leaking again! Just top up the sealant.

The newer versions seem to have thicker sidewalls and are easier to sort, but also a bit heavier.

BTW, I'm talking overnight stuff here, no quickie quickie just before the ride...

Funny thing is mine isnt leaking out of the sidewall it appears to be at the bead or is it rather that it leaks out of the sidewall right next to the bead, the worst place to try seal leaks?

Does the suggestion to leave the wheel parked into of a bucket allow the sealant more time to pool and seal leave each side for an hr then turn?

Yes, could work.  If not, I've seen threads on international forums recommending a thin layer of mold makers' latex on the rim where the bead of the tyre goes.  Not sure where in SA one would buy it though.

EDIT: The mold latex is much thicker than Stan's.  Many people make their own sealant with this latex by diluting it with window cleaner.  Apparently much cheaper than Stan's.

Sounds like a great idea because, as you say, Stans is pretty costly to use as a consumable. Need to do some research to see where we can obtain that latex. What kind of mould would use this? What industry?

Remove your tyre, clean the inside of the tyre properly with thinners...buy ps2 tyre fluid, refit tyre and add tyre fluid..you wont ever have problems again.

Didn't clean the inside of the tyre, forgot to do that but it's leaking at the bead not through the sidewalls, and I am using ps2 tyre fluid and it ain't sealing, not that that should be an issue with Ps2 as Stan's seems to struggle just as much with conti tyres.

mmm sure its not the rim then? I would test by trying the faulty tyre on the other rim, if the tyre is new and fualty Conti will swap them no questions asked, I emailed them about a tyre and they replaced without thinking twice

Having the same problem with my Conti rear - leaks only in one place - right next to the logo close to the bead - both sides. Trying the yogurt tub trick next.

Rim is hundreds, never had an issue and I inspected it and cleaned the bead area before mounting the tyre, who do you email? How many ml of PS2 fluid do you guys use, I'm on something like 150ml per tyre, quite alot ?

What's the yogurt tub trick?

I had the same problem with my Ikons. Would inflate it to 3bar with 150ml of sealant inside. After that it leaks air through a couple of places on the sidewall. A shake or two and rolling the wheel on the ground, the holes would seal. The next day the tire is flat....did this for more than a week and eventually it sealed.
