I have watched Jimmy Carr, I haven't seen his response after being knocked over by a car yet ,I am glad he inspires you.

More of an Izzard fan personally but Jimmy is horribly funny sometimes unless you're very politically correct. Oddly I've actually been more inspired by Lance Armstrong recently. I just started reading his book. I know nobody on here would dare make jokes about him only having one testicle because that would be offensive hey.

I don't know about you all, but the scariest thing about this image is the majority of the public who see nothin wrong with the depiction of a cyclist getting knocked.

It's confirmation of what we've said over and over. We have no thought in a non cyclists mind, ad for us to get hit, it's more and inevitability than a preventable tragedy.

South Africans need to wake up and realise that we all want to live and be happy. Your car isn't a free-of-responsibility-box.

Mr Mulholland : You seem to be the only one defending the decision at the moment, if it was not so offensive, surely others would have come to your defense by now.

Fact of the matter remains, the offending image could have been left out of the competition by 947 and not have let this controversial subject get this far, the radio station is trying to remove responsibility from themselves by saying the public voted for it, fact remains they were in control of the situation from day one...poor management knowing the image would spark reaction from anyone that has been affected by the lack of respect for cyclists on the road(or any of the other disgraceful parts of the images)

Sad portrayal of daily life in JHB. Not a moment goes by when I'm out on my road bike and I dont worry about getting hit from behind. Too many close shaves on main road in Midrand.

What really erks me more is that 94.7 endorses this mindset portrayed in the pic with an exhorbitant prize. Then turn around and say "they didnt choose it". Pathetic head in the sand attitude that just perpetuates the problem. Giving this crude "artwork" light of day just reinforces the attitudes that so many in JHB have towards cyclists.

Taxis driven by black dogs? Doesnt get more politically incorrect than that in SA...

I actually cannot believe that we haven't had any major issues on social media etc about the Taxi driver. We as cyclists are upset about the cyclist being knocked down, but man a black dog being the taxi driver. That is pretty offensive too!!

Guys please explain what was so offensive? The picture depicted the truth of what happens on our roads... nothing offensive about telling a story. Cyclists get knocked down...fact. Would it have been more to everyones taste if the cyclist and taxi driver were hugging? Look past your sensitivities and see it for what it was...a not so good designer taking the piss of the state of our city i.e. A satirical view...

Oh and its unfortunate they took the picture down, at least it was doing something for awareness of US cyclists...

Oh and its unfortunate they took the picture down, at least it was doing something for awareness of US cyclists...

Why don'y you rather explain to us in fine detail how the picture is constructive and good for the cause of road safety .

As for the awareness you presume it might have raised , there are other ways to raise awareness.

Firstly if I was black I would have been properly de moer in to be satirically referred to as a dog.

I am white and find it offensive.

The kids playing in the potholes, as kids we played in holes in the road after the rains, making little boats with matchsticks or grass, nothing new.

The giraffe incident happened in Pretoria not Johannesburg and was a rather embarrassing scenario that even made it on to S.N.L.

Do we really need to be reminded of that in a satirical way ?

This has f-all to do with being sensitive, but everything to do with the fact that cyclists mowed down by vehicles being depicted in a humorous or satirical manner is in poor taste and insensitive.

Why don't you tell those families who have lost a loved one to put their sensitivity aside and have a chuckle at a sH!t abortion of an editing job that had nothing to do with the heartbeat of Jozi.

Lastly, speak to me again after you get hit by a vehicle.

So you might as well take your patronising comment stick it in your pocket and do for the plea of road safety what this picture did not do, stand by your fellow cyclists, that is how you better the cause .

I don't think the majority who voted for it did so because they like the idea of taxi's running over cyclists. I would like to think that the people who voted for this picture did so because they felt it to be a representation of life in JHB.

In the same way I hope the artist was not trying to make fun of cyclists but rather was using the cyclist as a way of portraying how JHB taxis drive.

Using the dog as the driver is IMO the offensive part of this image.

At the end of the day this has hopefully created some awareness for us cyclists so lets not all turn on each other in this forum.

The only thing I was made aware of with the advent of that image, is that at the expense of cyclists lives, someone is almost a hundred thousand rand ritcher.

The really shocking part is that it seems the general public is accepting the way things are in this craphole, and laughing it off. A sad indication of the moral decay that is rife in this country.

How about a satirical badly edited cartoon of a gangrape? Or farm murders...

Hijacking with a kid being dragged behind the car....

So called everyday occurances that it seems can be made fun of and profited from?

I say it again, I am ashamed of being south african born

Firstly my comment was referring to the cycling aspect of the image, seen as that is the main focus of this forum...so lets just clear that up. Not once have I stated that it is constructive and or good for any cause what-so-ever... what it did do, was create awareness, once again of the despicable behavior toward cyclists on our roads. I think the how is quite simple, this thread should be self-explanatory in itself and my comment... So yes many ways to raise awareness, but whether you like it or not, and I don't particularly care if you do...it got people talking.

You immediately jump to the unfortunate conclusion that he is referring to black people as dogs, my take was that he is generalizing and saying taxi drivers drive like dogs...nothing racist there at all. Thats just you jumping to a marginalized conclusion...However I think it perfectly depicts the sad state of affairs in our city and things that occur on an almost daily basis...and I stand by that. And yes i truly do believe we need to be reminded on a daily basis of all the crap that goes on, maybe one day we will all stand up and do something about it...

Oh and just a bit of history, seen as you don't know me, I was in an accident in 2010 where a driver decided to turn in front of me, I t-boned the vehicle flying over the intersection and was lucky enough to have just broken my pelvis and jaw. So I guess, according to you, I do have the right to speak to you. Have I lost a fellow cyclist who was a close friend or family member...no, thank God, but I know three that I have ridden with over the years, and every time a cyclist is injured or killed it irks me as much as it does everyone else on this forum, I can assure you...

Up to this point Mr Earp I have not once been patronizing, but seen as I have already been accused by you, now would be a perfect time to start...You firstly need to wind you neck in a bit, because I was not attacking anyone, merely expressing my view and saying that people shouldn't be so sensitive but rather see it as an opportunity of awareness... And lastly, you should possibly find out what the word satirical means before you jump on your soapbox and attack me personally, because nowhere have I said this is humorous in any way. Just a quick definition for you... Satirical - the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing,or deriding vice, folly, etc. Hmmm think the image does this perfectly....So yes Mr. Earp this has everything to do with being sensitive, you yourself describe the image as being insensitive!!!

Nayr

A small handful of people, a minute group on this forum have no issue with this picture, you being one of them .

The rest find it offensive, that in itself speaks volumes.

Now let's have a look, telling people to put their sensitivity aside, that is being patronising ,you are welcome to search the meaning thereof yourself .

Why don't you tell someone like Cherise Stander that, and see how condescending and insensitive it is.

Taxi drivers drive like dogs, and it's not racist or demeaning ?

Clearly shows me you have no clue of how the rest of the people interpreted this bad attempt at getting ones hands on a R 100 k.

The saddest part of it are the people who voted for it and people like yourself trying to justify it.

That is somehow quite worrying and sickens me to the stomach a bit.

Even more amusing that you aren't man enough to admit that you or the creator of this image have no respect for others peoples feelings.

You do so by trying to get funny and define the word satire, and then proceed to try and justify the nature of this highly offensive creation, and by doing so you actually highlight that you still don't understand the image and it's offensive nature.

Now that little piece in bold, why don't you take those words to heart and become a doer .

As for you or anyone else thinking it raised awareness, wake up and smell the coffee .

I am about to have a cup and get on my road bike.

Am black and a cyclist however I don't understand white humour sometimes. Whats funny about a tragedy (cyclist being knocked down) and a racist slur (taxi driver depicted as a dog).I don't condone how taxi drivers drive but at the same time us cyclists we are not blameless too.

If the racial connotations of this picture make it to the general black public and especially taxi drivers 94.7 as a station may have put cyclist's lives at serious risk.

The taxi drivers are already reckless now you give them a reason to bash us!!!!
