Keeping Energy

I only tried it with the tropical flavour and it was a bit too sweet for me. Had to wash it down with a gel and water at the 5km mark of my last race.

Yeah I hate it when that happens! I can also recommend a Brutal Fruit instead of Energade for really intense racing...

Yes diet is very important, if you are starving yourself walking up a flight of stairs could make you feel light-headed.  My 2c (from my limited experience) don't buy into diets with a name, eat healthy, balanced.

Then regarding the ride, the kms you cycle don't mean much.  Think of your body as a 'fuel burning machine' (like a car).  If you go faster, you burn fuel faster, if you ride for longer periods, you burn more fuel - what I'm getting at, look at ride duration and intensity before you consider nutrition during the ride, rather than kms.

Your body has various sources of energy and will consume according the rate at which is required.  As a general rule of thumb - you have about 90mins of moderate exercise worth of fuel before you body starts 'slowing you down'.  If you are starting out and can't ride 90mins without bonking, maybe reduce the intensity.

There is a lot of info out there, but stick to the basics -

1.  Eat healthy and balanced during the entire day

2. Start with lower intensity rides and only start adding 'intervals' or higher intensity sections once you can comfortably ride about 90mins without tanking

3.  When you start riding longer than 90mins, try and add carbs to your nutrition on the ride

Take my and everyone else's advice within a pinch of salt though, everyone is different.

Most important - ENJOY YOUR RIDE!! makes a big difference!

Guys I do a 45min spinning class once a week which I use to focus on pedal action and left/right power efficiency and difference. What do you suggest I drink? bearing in mind I have to drive home in my car afterwards? And please only Italic answers will be taken seriously.

It is in italics as it is a quote from a book stating the current consensus in the field of exercise physiology based on thousands of hours of scientific research. I thought that would be obvious

Very cool that this is based on published peer reviewed scientific research, would you mind posting the link to the article as I've not come across it yet and would love to sharpen up my knowledge of exercise physiology.

As we are having a terrible time of drunk drivers hitting cyclists may I suggest the following..

During your class STRAIGHT ENERGADE. I know this sounds rough but I feel it will give you maximum results. On your arrival home (have it pre made if you like) One third of a 2l bottle containing Captain Morgans (rum) the rest of the bottle filled with... Naartjie flavoured Energade.    (or breast milk)

Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Well I see breast milk is now available on the hub so I will take some money out of my retirement fund and purchase some. Due to your post count and the italics I can be sure this will work. I'm just not sure i'm looking forward to straight energade. I will use this diet over the next few weeks and go klap some strava segments to see if i'm faster. As they say in the movies "to be continued...."

Maybe drop die Energade in a shot glass and have it with some lemon...  I have not used italics so perhaps take this with a pinch of salt as well.

Ok I will line up a shot in each flavour and see what goes best with the lemon.

The credibility of this just improved. Due to copperhead doing some research he found this info to be very helpful and has given it the A OK. So does this mean no more pinch of salt?

Salt

Does that help? Or is that like dividing by zero?

if you're a budget rider i'm assuming you're not into all sorts of expensive magic drinks or supplements.

I ride with half strength Game.  Its at least 3 times cheaper than any equivalent energy drink and works just fine.  Throw in a banana if you feel like something solid and you'll be 100%
