Snail, all the links and references you are citing are for well seasoned and properly trained athletes and concerns about their metabolic performance whilst training.

If you read the first post again, you will see the OP has a concern about completing 20kms. Typically the family meander distance at most race events. These are not the same scenario...

Hi Tubehunter, it appears to me based on the information the OP has provided that he doesn't have a problem completing more than 20km of cycling, but rather begins to lose power after this point and is looking for suggestions to improve his performance. I think the above studies are still incredibly relevant and useful for novice cyclists, as their bodies work in much the same way in this respect as well-trained cyclists. The Jeukendrup et al. (1997) source that I referenced above states explicitly, in fact, that novice cyclists would be expected to experience a greater improvement in performance than well-trained cyclists when ingesting carbohydrates.

By how much...that is quite a claim. Without numbers its a story, with numbers it becomes a fact.

According to the study, an improvement of 3% was observed during the first hour of exercise, compared to 2.3% for well-trained cyclists. One would expect that for longer durations the improvements would also be similar.

You reach a point hey..

Snail - all the objections are based on guys training a specific established way.  I do my interval training on a wattbike and anything less than 1h15-1h20 I don't use anything else but water, and that is at many max effort intervals.

If OP starts losing power in that same time period it is very likely that he is either very unfit and needs to up his base or he is going BTTW in which case you should start losing power.

When training for a longer term performance gain, unnecessary sugars on the bike that could be avoided should be avoided (enter rouxtjie's argument about p/w - which I will argue with you about that 8% gradient as well, but one thing at a time).

But if you want to believe your view you are welcome, but general consensus...seems to disagree.

Are you having a laugh? Energade? We know nothing about this chap apart from the fact that he gets tired after 20kms. And you are telling him to drink energade? If you were my coach I would demand my rondelas back. You are very funny though.

HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!!The energade thing was so funny!!!! lol!!!
