JUMA Rant - Show me the money

Regarding the injuries, I had a proper slip in the stormwater drains. Looked behind me and my front wheel travelled onto an algae patch. Smacked my ass hard! However, I don't blame the organisers or anyone else.

A lot of the injured folk may also have played a part in their own misery, by overestimating their own skill or through negligence (as in my case  ).

I think that ripping people off is a foolish and very short-termist business model.  Not my style.  Joburgers are just so used to being ripped that they don't even see it happening - just look at the comments above - completely oblivious

I have organised a fair number of cycling events over the years. I can assure you the costs are horrendous. For example Porta-Potties all down the trail don't come for free. I can assure you they will not have ripped anyone off by much.

Do you know the person who organised this race? On what do you base your statement that his motives are "so far from giving a 5#it, and it really all seems to be about the cash"?

I think you should apologise to him!

I think he should apologise to all the people he ripped off, and all the people who got hurt and were left unattended.  He should apologise to all the foolish people stupidly expecting water points, and sitting around for hours in the sun due to poor planning on his part.  He should apologise to the finishers who had to go to their cars to fetch cash to buy some water that was not even provided at the finish.  An apology for ONE of the above would be a start in the right direction.

Hehe, I'm embarrased how long it took my dehydrated brain to figure out how it worked. Thought it was broken for a good 15 minutes.

I think you're in the minority on this one fortunately.... How much do you think we should have been charged ?

Jeez, I couldn't imagine the logistical nightmare of organising this type of event through a major metropolis. Does anyone know if this has happened anywhere else in the world?

There are going to be plenty of teething issues on the first attempt. If next years race suffers from the same problems then have a go at the organisers. Until then, maybe give the guys a break.

It is unfair to say that no effort went into this. I watched the development of the trail over the many months before the race. Lots of effort went into this.

I didn't ride it (berg and bush instead) but people I know who did, and are very serious about MTB, really enjoyed it for what it was.

I really hope I can ride it next year, assuming it doesn't clash with the B&B again.

PS. I saw some pictures of the bottlenecks - some of those riders looked very green and this is to be expected. Like any race - seeding makes all the difference.

Honestly now, why is it whenever someone airs a fair and honest gripe that is important to them it is considered trolling?  Just because it may be hard to swallow does not make it untrue, nor abusive - its just not roses and sunshine, or is that all that is acceptable these days?.  Why must it all be roses and sunshine?  Don't you want things to improve?  Pretending its all rosy is not going to achieve this, surely?

Neither is the level of righteous indigntion that you're currently peddling.

Yes, the medical backup could and should have been better, and the waterpoints were lacking. But again - it was the first event of hopefully many more of its type, and these things do not cost a small amount of money.

Yet, you're saying that the organisers are inept, uncaring, money-grabbing bastards because they have the temerity of charging more than you deem necessary for an event which you have no idea about the costs thereof.

Yes, your experience is valid. yes, your friend has a right to be upset about the level of medical assistance there was at the event, and about being "left" to his own devices when there was no medical backup coming your way (if it was so close to the main thoroughfare, though, why not call 112 or another emergency medical number to come and fetch him?) but you don't need to do it like this and just try to tear the organisers to shreds because of their perceived shortcomings.

This reminds me of J Ancer, in some way...

Constructive criticism is good. Others managed to do this without getting nasty and I am sure that will be appreciated by the organisers. If they don't take the constructive criticism on board then their event (and any revenue from it) will fizzle out in a couple of years.

Saying that this was a scheme to rip people off, where no effort was put in, is not constructive and does certainly not lend itself to an improved event.

What did you expect, everyone to drop to their knees and applause? If you can't take the same robust honest gripe to be aired in return to, perhaps step back and take stock.
No one is pretending anything, the fact is that both the organisers and many riders underestimated the route and challenges on the day.

In fact, the organisers have publicly acknowledged the shortfallings and voiced the actions they'll take. That's called accountability and how things will improve. "Fleecing" and "Rip off" are your opinions, not facts.

It'd seem your anger is clouding your judgment.
