SANS Parks Tokai MTB price increase

..who hit the volume??!

Nico, yes and no. Remember that we have been working with laying a foundation to new regulations and overall perception on the sport since 2011. It's not time now for an outcry over a day permit - which they are even admitting is expensive by encouraging the purchase of the activity card. The TMNP people who matter here, know the value/cost relationship but there is pressure from Pretoria on the money spinners like this Park.

It's quite possible that people are not aware of the process still running since TMNP and the Working Group committee sat down in 2011 to plot out what was needed for MTB.

The two main criteria was to be representative as a constituted group made up of local representatives and update the activity management plan for mountain biking in this National Park. The cost is carried by the Table Mountain Mountain Bike forum.

SANParks has a massive top heavy structure that we have no choice to conform to, but it doesn't matter we still need a user manual and as it happens, we are about to present it to public for comment. It's an expensive exercise and involves several groups who contract specialists and consultants to manage each step in the process.

CoCT is looking at the Activity permit funds management and allocation issue, so it escalates politically quite quickly on the chain, some teeth! (the public meeting was mentioned on this thread)

To rally change now would be a waste, save your energies we are about to go to public participation anyway.. It's taken years of sweat - hear that simon123?  ;)

I heard yesterday on the radio and I am sure that everyone is aware about the financial situation that this country is in.

Interesting that you should comment about pressure from pretoria, as that makes me wonder cause in order for the country to make up money to pay debt, they are gonna have to increase taxes. Now what I am wondering about is, whether the increase in parks/reserves etc is part of this program. We all know money isnt being put back and instead its being filtered elsewhere.

However that being said, alot of parliament members earn insane amounts of money, drive state owned cars etc. I think they should take a decrease in salary to pay the debt.

But anyway back to the topic(kinda), Could the tariff increase be part of the fund collection to repay the debt?

Hey Deon.

I don't think the progress that you and more recently us in the committee is being questioned by the hubbers. But more the value of a R60 day fee.

Some people thought my PDS comparison was stretching it so let's look more locally. It cost's R25 to ride Jonkers. The trails in Jonkers are plentiful, well maintained and well built.

Whilst the Tokai trails for the most part are built and maintained by enthusiastic amateurs. Us. Add to that the fact that we as builders use our own vehicles and tools and have to source material and labor from outside makes it VERY hard for us as regular and passionate users of the mountain to understand the justification of a 33% price increase when there has been no increase or improvement in the trail offering on the ground.

Exactly.

This is why I've decided to effectively boycott them. Yes, it's going to mean more travelling for me, yes I really love some of the trails, but I feel morally obliged to sanction something that's wrong as little as I possibly can.

So where you gonna ride? Gspot, contermans, Jonkers,? each one is further and further away. I stay down the road from you and I always look at going somewhere else other than Tokai, but I still end up riding there even if its just once a month.

My excuse for going to Gspot or Contermans is that it will take me almost the same time to get there

Now that is a good comparison.

Suppose the big difference there

Tokai = Sanparks

Jonkers = CapeNature

When I started to ride at Jonkers I also started to ask that ? and came to same conclusion.

I think maybe the main diff also is that TMNP falls under a national governing body where as cape nature is local, I do stand corrected

For sure.

But does  the fact that Tokai is government and Jonkers isn't justify a 33% tariff increase with no facility improvements?

Just for the record I'm not some troll looking to diss Tokai. I'm a lover of Tokai. I grew up in the area and I moved back to the area as an adult as soon as I could afford a house in the area specifically for the Mountain Biking. I've assisted and organized more build days that I care to remember and I'm part of Tokai MTB.

Understood but therein lies the reason why I posted a reply. The increase/improvement in facility will only be possible after the process of revising the docs around the activity is complete. The increase for day permits comes at a *** time but the plan to revise the offering is long under way.

The permit does not affect regular users who have activity cards but for those using Tokai infrequently, hang tight, the value will hopefully be realised soon.

I was told this weekend that I am going bald.. it better be realised soon!

I always knew he was going to pull his hair out over Tokai. Better check your own head in the mirror too! :ph34r:
