Rear derailleurs for 1x10 conversion

I need some help on choosing  a new rear derailleurs. For  1x10 conversion I currently have a rapide narrow wide chainring and a normal XT derailleurs. I have dropped the chain on a few occasions so I'm going to get a clutch derailleur  and I'm not sure which is the best clutch derailleur to get. I would like to stick with Shimano and iv looked at the zee and XT derailleurs which is better?

Your chain is too long. Remove 1 link and test.

Agree, I am also running a Rapide and have had no issues, just shortened my chain as per the instructions.

There are a few options.

Both SRAM and Shimano clutch derailleurrs are good. I am very happy with XT since quite a while.

If you want to add a 42t cog to your cassette at any time (most likely you will because it makes lots of sense) you will be faced with the fact that normal 10x derailleur are not made to deal with the geometry of this wide range cassette. Both can be 'forced' to work (overextend the b-screw) but this will decrease the crispiness of the shifting to some extent, especially in the lower gears. The SRAM unit deals with the abuse a bit better than the native XT, but since I converted my XT medium cage derailleur with the OneUp "Rad Cage" shifting is (almost) back to normal XT crispiness. This after market mod will only work with the XT Shadow Plus medium cage derailleur, not with the Zee.

By now there may be more options out there since this niche is developing quite fast...

So I can't get a RAD cage for my SGS (long cage) XT shadow plus?

Quick question so you guys can carry on with good advice...

So last night i got round to working on my own bike for a change. I over extended the cage spring in my jokey with a drop i took a while back. The spring is buggered and shimano does not have any spares or sell them loose.

With having had a long cage RD and breaking it my options are.

Xt medium cage with clutch

Zee short cage with clutch

Saint short cage with clutch

I am more of an aggressive rider and does the odd jump here or there. Love my trail riding as well.

My ratio are as follow.

30 up front with 11x40 setup in the back

The zee and saint wrap the small sprockets 11 and 12 a lot better than the longer cages so no slip but i am just worried about overextending the Rd and having to splash the cash again.

I also have not needed to use the clutch at all but with the new frame i dont know.

Rocky mountain element 29er with 30 t up front and 11x40 setup at the back

# Which one of the RD would work the best?

Thanks guys

Not sure about the Saint, but the widest cassette the Zee can handle is 36. I have a long cage XT with clutch, so I'm sure the medium cage will also work well, providing better ground clearance than the long cage.

I'm saving for this 1 X 10 as well , My plan is to buy a new XT cassette , remove the 17 t and add the 42 t which Evo Bikes sell and Buy the 32 Wolf tooth front blade from them as well, I do have the XT Clutch derailor already , Also heard a normal derailor works , but there is some chain slap . Cant wait for this conversion ,LOL just hope I ll get to the top off the hills in one piece .

take your 15t and 17 t out and add a road bike 16 t. Works like a charm and a more even spread of gears as well

Just check that the XT cassette can come apart. One of the guys here at work had to replace his XT cassette with a SRAM as he could not remove his 17t.

Having run 1x10 with one of those dustbin lid sprockets on my Tracer for a while now I have to be honest about the whole 1x thing. I'm not completely sold on the idea.

It's not a one size fits all solution and the only real benefit that i can work out for sure is a slightly quieter drivetrain. To have a decent spread of gears where you aren't spinning out on the downhills you have to run quite a big ring up front which means you're a really strong rider or kakking off on the climbs or pushing. I've also felt noticeable drivetrain feedback when riding uphill with the clutch on.

When I was running a 2x10 with a 26/36 combo up front I had a better spread of gears less drivetrain feedback.

I really apprechiate this honnest comment.

Its weird this sport of ours. Like before you cough 5k for new wheels or new 1 x 10 grouppo, the mind convinces the common sence that its going to make a worlds difference but It really doesnt always.

I have been sitting on the sideline because for me even just having gone from 3 x 9 speed to 2 x 10 was a bit of a shift, now to 10 x 1.. Im not convinced..

Having said that, one tooth difference in the casette of the SRAM X1 in my opinion makes quite an attempt at solving that "gap" at the one end of the spectrum. Which Is why its funny that no one has come up with a 10t casette retrofit.

I cant wait for someone to come up with a system where the 4 biggest sprockets on a casette or a Chainring for that matter, is replaced by system where one physical chainring expands and contracts to make different Diametrs + gear rations as a pose to measuring them by teeth. In theory I guess its like a g-box vibe. In my mind the only thing keeping it from working is the chain coming off the 4 teeth clusters.. Anyway. Leave it to them. But Hurry up guys!

I was thinking about running a 36 with 12/36(the only random 10 speed cassette) on my XL 29er. Now I am worried about the 36t because everyone is running 32t and even 30t.

You have to be power to push a 36 but it can be done, especially in Gauteng. What are you riding currently? If you're running a 32 middle ring and spend your time there mostly then 36 may be a bit of a jump.

Currently on a 28/39 crankset and riding 90% of the time on the 39 and only change to 28 when the chain angle is getting bad, well for me it is bad. Yep mostly Gauteng still studying so no out of town riding and racing.
