Riding when it's wet and sloppy is the most fun of all.  And then you can just pop around to the volunteer build day on the first Saturday of every month and repair whatever damage you may have done  :whistling:

Another 2 things I don't get:

1. Why are people so damn unfriendly while passing someone??? Apparently it costs a lot of oxygen to just say Hello, 'Sup or whatever floats your boat. I am not asking you to be my friend just an acknowledgement of, dude your a MTB'er. (I am working on a hypothesis I want to test during a race... Say hello to everyone, watch the racing snakes fall off their bikes from the shock of being greeted and well win...)

2. Pull that stick out your behind(so your neck may move) and stop judging the guy riding the same trails as you... Yes I ride a hardtail, it may only have 100mm of travel but that does not mean I must wear lycra (Baggies FTW!), yes it is 2.2 tyres front and rear, yes the stem is 60mm and the bars are wide, no the bike did not cost me 100k, but yes i'll probably still kick your arse down the trail... IT'S HOW I LIKE TO RIDE MY BIKE YOU FOOL... All of us are not racing snakes you know.

It's sad. back in the day when MTB was not as big as it is today we used to be a friendly happy bunch that had appreciation and respect for one another by the mere fact that we all shared a common "happy place"...

my 2c

I actually think most of the riders at tokai are quite friendly.

There will always be the occasional snot. But in general the vibe is lekker.

As for people judging me or my bikes I couldn't care less.

Sometimes I'll decide to take my trail bike for fullface fridays.

I once saw a guy at tokai on a 160mm am hardtail and MX boots.

Clearly not a single f#k given...awesome

I've found that the guys who can't be bothered to greet are the "mountain roadies", in their team bibs and matching tops, usually riding a carbon bike, wearing shoes that look like they should be used on the road only.

Yes, this might be a generalisation, but that's my experience, and that's coming from me... A roadie who rides the mountain in baggies and flat pedals.

They are angry about the R60 bucks entrance fee.....

did it seriously go up to R60??

wow, even crc could learn a thing or two about this kind of extortion!

also, if you mean close calls with people riding down the jeep track, then you're not being wide enough, people who ride down jeep track are the people who make the "mtb is more dangerous than road riding" myth... its stupid and dangerous.

if youre talking about overtaking up the jeep track then i agree with you, however its not a problem i have...

ive got a solution!!

get a bike with more travel that is heavier and pedals worse! if youre still having issues then get even more travel, until youre going the same speed as the people who pissed you off so much before, but youre on a dh bike or something!

ok, maybe not such a great idea :/

Riding time = 24 mins from home to Tokai, 1 hour to the mast, 15 mins to ride down & 21 mins to get home.

Amount of riding time granted by wife = 2 hours. As soon as I can take a nice chunk of time of the rest of my ride I will hit the singletrack until then, I will leave it to the baggy pant brigade

Get a new wife.

Speaking from the other side, while I don't " bomb" down the jeep track I do use it when Tokai is busy as there are plenty of guys who come down Vasbyt way faster than I do the jeep track as my skills on single track sucks and I'd hate screwing up someone elses ride as I plod my way down Vasbyt.

Doesn't matter, bro. Do it anyway! If one of us is held up we generally just stop and wait for a while, or use the slower speed to check out "alternative" lines...

Yup maybe you're right. Just feels k@k holding others up. Obviously I prefer the track as it's the only way I'll improve.

precisely! And if you feel that bad about "holding others up" then just pull off for a while when you hear oles coming down. Trust me - people WILL notice, and say thanks, and some of them may even offer tips. You could even attempt to follow them down - the majority of people that ride tokai (the single track, that is) are friendly ass people, more than willing to share what they've learned over the years

Heee haw, hee haw! Donkey or ass, not sure which???....anyhoo, Tokai was cool!, Only saw one guy coming down the jeep track....and he was smiling ear to ear, so either 1.) He was enjoying hisself!  or 2.) Was not from Tokai and didn't know about the flyby/scowl/STRAVA attitude one should have at Tokai ....he even greeted me!! Idiot! :whistling: How dare he!?

gravity orientated riders dont like being held up, in the same way you dont like being held up going up.

that being said, i havent heard a single rider who can go down a hill fairly quick see someone going down the jeep track and say "well thank goodness hes not going to be in my way when i go down vasbyt now!"

no, they all say "now thats how you hurt yourself" (especially when seeing people bombing down the jeep track, people going slow are just "wasting altitude")

i would personally prefer to just stop and wait for someone so i can have a fun run than have to peel that same person off a tree (or another rider, for that matter) cause they were going down the jeep track too fast, even if it ruins my strava.

however...

if i am CLEARLY waiting to give someone a headstart so i can go down with a clear run and some xc rider just rides past and down the ST at the breakneck speed of a brisk walk, then im pissed, now i have to wait for them too!!

thats annoying.

PS

please at least apologize if youre riding/walking up a singletrack and you get in someones way, pulling a stupid/surprised face is the wrong thing to do! why are you surprised? were you not expecting to encounter someone going the correct way down a singletrack?

a quick "shi!t man im so sorry!" goes a long way, but thats a topic for another thread

Yip, exactly that.

I generally hang around for quite a while at ST entries to leave as large a gap I can between myself and slower riders. Trust me, we work around you and most of us don't mind. In fact, it's great to see people building up skills and confidence on the mountain!

Whenever I manage to catch up to someone on Vasbyt I am too busy being chuffed with myself to worry about being slowed down a little.

Yeah, enjoying my little 10 seconds of: "I am Sam Hill!". I honestly haven't had any issues with people both faster and slower than me. Most people are quite considerate on single track, in my experience. And those that make a mistake are usually quite quick to apologise

i agree with everyone above with the whole go down the st anyway we'll make a plan...

although if you are causing a traffic jam and there is a place for you to move over, we would very much appreciate it!

what i usually do is ride as fast as i can to a wide part of st and then pull over and slow down so people can get past without me stopping
