mon-goose Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 what??!?! Then how come Oscar only get 10 months? does not compute.. agreed, makes no sense at all.
KarlvN Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 LUV IT!!!!!! Seriously though, let us not make everything about Oscar. He is in jail. Wether it's fair or not is not really up to us. The State has indictated it will apply for leave to appeal his sentence. What I DO find interesting though is that the judge in this matter considered the opinion of society. "The court cannot ignore the reasonable expectation of society." Oscar's judge decided NOT to. Interesting...
Ispeed_V Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Fantastic News. Just goes to show how screwed up our Justice system is though: - Bike Jacking = 11 years - Shooting and killing somebody = 5 years
slabs Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 When your national soccer team's goalkeeper gets murdered for a cell phone & Phiyega receives a 10-year medal for 2 year's service In case you were wondering what those fancy medals were for....1. Phiyega holds a 10-year Commemoration Award. "The DA congratulates Commissioner Phiyega for the amazing feat of earning this medal in her two years of service."2. Gold Medal for Outstanding Service. "With crime rates on the rise, Marikana, police brutality, mall robberies escalating out of control, thousands of convicted criminals in the SAPS and many other issues still outstanding, one can clearly see how the commissioner's 'excellent service' has affected the SAPS."3. Soccer World Cup 2010 Support Award. "This is arguably Riah Phiyega's greatest achievement. It is incredible that she was able to earn this award given that the World Cup took place a full two years before the commissioner even joined the police."4. The fourth medal was for the 11 police agencies that were amalgamated into one in 1994. "This is extremely well done given that this, too, far preceded her time at the SAPS by 18 years," Kohler Barnard said.
nonky Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 what??!?! Then how come Oscar only get 10 months? does not compute.. Armed robbery has a minimum sentence, if I recall my criminal law correctly..Oscar got 5 years for NEGLIGENTLY killing his gf, ie not on purpose.
Patchelicious Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Great news! Lets hope this sets a standard for the hit n run guys too! As for this debate about Oscar, WHO cares. Enough with him already.
Cassie Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Can someone please post a link for the original news break on the conviction? I need to forward it to somebody and Google is letting me down...
Gandalf Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Does anyone have a link to the article regarding the sentencing? I can only find the links of the incident.
Bloukrans Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Dis nou goeie nuus! Who is this Oscar guy you talking about?
ichops Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Yay !!!!! at last - maybe just maybe the message will get through
Bikes Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 Great news and a just verdict! My ONLY concern...this news about the sentencing will not make the headlines and catch the international community's attention like the original GoPro footage did... what a pity! We need to show SA and the world that there is still some justice to be handed out! {sometimes at least} SPREAD the WORD!!!Unfortunately not. Sadly there was no journalist/reporters in the court room. That's why I thought it should get out.
Bikes Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 Problem is he was a magistrate and not a judge. I sense an appeal coming up..I actually spoke to the accused persons and their attorney. They indicated they will not be appealing the sentence.
Bikes Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 Can someone please post a link for the original news break on the conviction? I need to forward it to somebody and Google is letting me down...Unfortunately there is no news link to this. I posted this because I was privileged to be present. As stated in another reply there were no journalist/.reporters in the court room at the time of the sentence
Bikes Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 Does anyone have a link to the article regarding the sentencing? I can only find the links of the incident. Sorry there has been no media reports about it. I see though that PPA quoted me verbatim on their Facebook page.
