The "I hate Specialized" Bandwagon...... what's the deal?

I don't like to dress all in one brand. Looks sort of creepy to me. I like g star jeans for example but to wear the jeans looks cool but to also at the same time wear the G Star shoes, jacket and t shirt makes you like you got no sense of style and no imagination. Variety works

I used to buy Spez shoes and sometimes helmets. Gloves even on occasion. Good stuff. Then my LBS suddenly wasn't allowed to stock these items unless he became a Spez store. He wasn't keen. I wasn't keen being forced to buy from a supplier I didn't know. So I simply replaced the Spez helmet when the time came with a mavic. Same with the shoes. Gloves are now Gyro. Not a big deal. If I make a Spez store my LBS my gear will all be Spez. As I said, creepy.

My point is. I like the Spez stuff. I had really good experiences with it. Not such a big fan of their style of business. And they are not so ahead of their competition that I don't have viable alternatives.

I am pretty sure they evaluated all this stuff and figured out they would lose some customers but would gain more than they lost. If I can have a cup of coffee and chat with Tony and Derrick while buying Spez gear I will do so. If I have to shlep off to some other shop where I don't know anyone to buy the gear then it simply won't happen.

the store who bends to the will of the brand gets preference. What grates is that Bridge were bending by pouring their own money (not the banks) into the new store and building it for the requirements spec put in place. It just appears they never intended to stay with Bridge.

I get the bit about the franchise, but these are not franchises for sale. Spec is not putting its own money in as far as I know. It was all the retailers

That right there is true, to mention the likes of KFC business model in an argument supporting what Spez are doing is misleading to say the least.

Can somebody show me where it was that small South African shops built up the KFC brand before it was franchised?

With all due respect, I believe this is bollocks. I like Apple products as do many other people. We don't prance around proclaiming Apple is the best, but non-apple users PRESUME this because we like the Apple ecosystem.

The same with Specialized - those who ride Spez love the bikes, the quality and the style. Those who don't own Spez PRESUME the owners are rich and pretentious because they bought an expensive bike.

Sorry, but that is a you problem.

Have you never seen an Apple v Android/PC/Samsung thread?

Really?

Because there tends to be a lot of prancing on both sides.

The problem with any damn bicycle I ride is that the engine always seems pap. Will a "Spez" fix this?

Litigation[edit]

Specialized has a history of aggressively protecting its trademarks.

In 1990, Specialized tried to sue RockShox Inc, claiming the company's name too closely resembled the bicycle model name Rockhopper[17] The case was ultimately dismissed with prejudice.

In 2006 Specialized sued Mountain Cycle over its use of the model name "Stumptown" (nickname for Portland), alleging it resembled the Specialized model name Stumpjumper.[18] Mountain Cycle closed doors shortly thereafter.

In 2009 Specialized had a trademark dispute with a manufacturer of bicycle bags, Epic Designs, now Revelate Designs.

In 2011 Portland wheel builder Epic Wheel Works was forced to change its name due to potential trademark conflict with Specialized.[19]

In 2012 the company sued two former employees after they started the bicycle brand Volagi. Specialized lost on all accounts except one and was awarded one dollar in damages after spending 2.5 million dollars on the lawsuit.[20][21]

In 2013 Specialized mailed a small bike shop owner in Canada a cease and desist letter over its use of the city name Roubaix in its shop name and wheels, the name of a town in France that rose to prominence as a textile center in the 15th century [22] and has hosted an iconic bicycle race since 1896.[23][24] This follows on from Specialized's trademarking of the word in Canada. The situation and behavior towards the shop owner caused some reactions from cyclists worldwide in the days after a story on the matter was published by the Calgary Herald in early December 2013.[25][26] On the 9th of December Fuji Bikes owner, Advanced Sports Internationalof Philadelphia said that in fact, they are the legal owner of worldwide rights to the Roubaix trademark. Fuji has had a Fuji Roubaix road bike model in its lineup since 1992, and has licensed the name to Specialized since 2003.[27] The dispute between Specialized, ASI and the Canadian shop owner was resolved in December 2013, and Specialized vowed to be more cautious in its pursuit of trademark violators going forward.[28]

In 2014, Specialized forced bicycle builder Neil Pryde to change the name of their Alize bike model.[29]

My apologies.

I realised I am posting this in the wrong thread .

If I stare at this long enough, like 2 seconds, it makes me:-

-want to ride my bike

- want to buy another bike

-depressed for still not having a Brookes saddle

-yearn even more for the "atrocity" the Sheriff posted yesterday

-want to ride my bike

-miss my bikes

-wonder why I'm at work instead of on my bike

-want to ride my bike...

If your reason for hating them is their corporate bullying, then I hope you are not using an Apple or Microsoft product to access this forum....

But I suspect these "reasons" are merely justifications for an inherent irritation towards them because they are the choice or go to brand for "people who do not know better"...

Who do you think brought KFC to SA before it became the most profitable franchise to own in SA from a franchisee point of view? Only difference with KFC is the small South African stores selling KFC product saw the value in creating "concept" stores....

Do you really think KFC looked at a map and decided "That's where we need to go to open a few stores"?

Around 40% market share at most stage races is definitely the "go to" brand. The world is made up of brilliant marketers selling to "people who do not know better".  But then I just bought a new BlackBerry Passport so what do I know about "go to" brands?
