1m passing law legislated in the Western Cape

For those of you unaware of this, the Western Cape Government passed the 1m law last year. It requires motorists to pass a cyclist, giving him or her 1m space. The motorist is allowed to cross a white line in the process, if it safe to do so.

If it is not safe to pass a cyclist and give them 1m, then the motorist should wait behind the cyclist. As long as is required.

The law is legislated, yet there is no awareness around it. No signage on roads frequented by cyclists.

The road from Camps Bay to the top of Chappies would be the ideal starting point. And I am sure you can think of a lot of other locations.

My suggestion for a campaign slogan: Please give me 1 Metre

A law that we don't know about, is a law that doesn't exist.

Any ideas for an appropriate slogan?

Just sell a 1m spoke that you can attach to your seat post, then you can identify the cars that do not pass with 1m space by all the cars with scratches down the side of them. Will make it easier for the police to find them

That is great news, but how about advertising that it is a law to cycle  in the cycle lane as well!!

Motorists do not understand what a cycle lane is, some think that its the yellow lane or pavement. Do not give them more things to hurl at cylists that are not in the wrong.

Let's maybe start with one thing at a time that will save lives.

cycling in the lane takes u out of drivers way. what's the problem with getting that attitude fixed first? That's one very easy thing to fix since its within the power of the cyclist. Instead, we want to fixate on drivers? really?

While we on the topic of things within our control to fix, lets toe the "keep to the left and single file", "red robots mean stop and go when its your turn, aka wait for the green light " rules too.

Point is, there's lots us cyclists still need to do as well, not just them infernal motorists.

Cape Town motorists are not aware of a couple of road rules.

One i can think of, and experience daily: KEEP LEFT ! PASS RIGHT!!!!!!!!

The poephol driving 80 in the outside lane ( in a 120KM/H zone) does not seem to understand. :offtopic:

Sorry, just irritated in general with motorists at this stage.

Now.....where is my beer so i can calm down

I agree with the sentiment that cyclists have to toe the line as well. If we as a group obey the traffic rules, we can claim the moral high ground.

Like I said today: a cyclist is a motorist is a cyclist is a motorist is a cyclist..... As a car owner and cyclist, I occupy both sides of the 1m at any given time. I will pledge to obey the law on both sides of the 1m line. Hopefully that way I will contribute to a safer environment on the roads.

What is really scary is that I have spoken to some traffic officers - some senior - and they are NOT AWARE of the legislation  .....  Sehriaas!!

so typical, so many laws and almost no of them are enforced yet you always hear about them and alot of the times some like this 1m passing is made into a big deal through newspapers etc

If a car always passes a cyclist with 1m gap you will have zero accidents as the car would always be 1m away.

Lets maybe go after the things that kill cyclists. Like being hit from behind.

Would be nice if they put some form of signs up along Kommetjie road too, even if its just one at either end.

Most people give more than plenty of room and get a wave as thanks, but a handful of motorists, busses and taxis don't care and come so close that if you so much as twitch off of your line you would need to go straight to hospital if you survived.

Other than that, all is happy riding to date.
