Continental Gatorskins or GP 4000 black chili

23 for racing, 25mm for training/racing

I run the GP4000s 25mm on my racing wheels and I haven't had a punture yet.

Some additional tips:

1. Choose routes that have less debris.

2. Also, at stops like coffee pit stops or so / traffic lights, sweep the tyres with your gloves to remove any debris. Do this as often as possible.

3. As you roll, also scan the road ahead for debris and avoid those areas that are full of debris.

Thanks for the additional advice.

I'm definitely trying my best to avoid debris laden roads, but what I has noticed in my short time cycling is from week to week the amount of debris can change.

Haven't thought about checking my tyres mid-ride - that is a very good point.

I have become quite good at scanning the road ahead, but as happened on Saturday sometimes you only notice at the last minute and end up not being able to avoid it.

Really appreciate the advice!

So, thanks for all your great help. Did some research into the tyres you recommended and it seems to me that the gatorskins seem like a good bet, which also lead me to stumble across the GP 4 seasons, any opinions on these tyres?

I really can't afford to blow the bank on a set of tyres (being a student), but in the same breath would rather spend more and not have to replace that often. Also only have one whilst at the moment, so wouldn't be able to switch between training and racing as some of you suggested.

Thanks.

Also, just one more question from a newbie! Can somebody explain the difference between folding and non-folding tyres to me? Is one type better than the other, or does it could down to preference?

Thanks again.

Hi all!

So, I'm pretty new to cycling, only been on the road about 6 months, so I'm not that clued up on tyres.

Basically, my bike came stock with Continental Ultra Sport 700x23c tyres, which at first as a newbie I was completely happy with. Having put about 1200km into them over the last 3 months that my opinion has changed considerably.

I've had 3 punctures in my last 3 rides and have found that the tires have been pretty shredded by debris on the road. Now, I guess this could just be my bad luck, as until the last 3 rides I had no issues whatsoever, but it is worrying to see how quickly the tyres are gotten damaged by the road. (I run the tyres at 100psi front and back)

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to perhaps invest in a better set of tyres, and if so, what would you recommend? I wouldn't want anything racey - would just want something that is puncture resistant and reliable.

Thanks in advance!

Stewart.

I'm also a complete noob - could you maybe explain why you say this?

Also, should I for instance have 1 x new gatorskin and 1 x new 4000S tyres, which one should I put on the front and which on the back wheel?

I'm guessing front wheel gets more punctures due to it being "first" to go over the objects?

Get an Endurance tire.

Michelin Pro 4 Endurance or Specialized All Condition Armadillo is a great balance of performance and durability.
It's going to give you lots of km's and they have great puncture resistance.

Thanks for the advice - read a review of the Michelin and it seems like a real great tyre.

GP4000s has a lower rolling resistance (CRR) and good aero properties = faster

I'm at work so I cant look for the link to the studies but thats why.

If you want to avoid punctures look where you are going. I've had no problems with GPs. I also dont ride through glass.
