1 x Rudy Project designer T-shirt, designed and manufactured in Italy, valued at R220

but do you really want it?

what's wrong with local garments?

One way of getting rid of stock that is not moving....

Craft is 500mm and local is 340mm. The cost per mm is not that much higher

I highly dispute this, it's about double the price min. Craft beer is measured in ml anyway.

but now I'm thinking, why don't craft clothing start their own brewery?

I rode this year, but won't next year. Decision made easy by the organiser for 2 reasons:

1. Perception: didn't like the fact that they damaged local trails and seemed to apply bullying tactics.

2. Financial: I don't want to be forced into paying for (extra) stuff I would normally not buy.

1 race less next year will do my legs some good too.

It is interesting how companies are climbing on the bandwagon of creating this "extra" value. Started by loyalty programs at banks, copied by medical schemes and grocery/clothing stores and perfected by Discovery...

Even Afrihost yesterday launched a R99 extra benefit for some added value.

Yet, with all these loyalty schemes they have thousands of suckers paying for it and many not even using it.

So all ASG are doing is climbing on the bandwagon.

Some may find this "value for money", I for one do not! Maybe people need to look at how much they are paying for all these perceived value schemes.

Then again, mountain bikers generally get it easy compared to roadies when it comes to ripoffs, take the Dome 2 Dome for example, R300 entry and you get a paper envelope with a race number, never mind the fact that there aren't even bike marshals!

I'm a newbie to cycling...

I also dont get how it makes sense for organisers to charge so much AND have sponsorships at every event!

"Perceived value"

I saw a post on the thread of the race named after a large ocean dwelling mammal and the result of grape fermentation , where someone had listed most of the components that he thought made up the cost of the entry. Amongst the items mentioned was the Craft cycling shirt which we all received. He valued it at R800. I know for a fact that it cost a lot less than half that amount.

Perceived value- a fantastic weapon to have in your arsenal of entry fee justification.

These kind of posts are very confusing!

Who is holding the gun to your head saying you have to enter ? Oh wait, you want something but cannot afford something. Sounds like an economics lesson of needs and wants, with a bit of supply and demand.

If it grinds a person so much, then dont enter ! Simple ! If it is to expensive, there are lots of other places to ride at HALF the price.

Make peace with your wallet, either way.

And while complaining about the price of things, did you see how 2l of milk costs ?

*edit, apologies feeling grumpy*

Edit edit. if they put on a good race and the demand for entries is there, and they get to market their brand, then that is a good business model. Can one say Cape Epic ?

well said!!!!

Well here is my two cents , did a three day toer last year with mates, about 8 people in group, through the Cederberg. Carried small rucksack and washed our kit each night. Stayed in lekker accommodation and ate and drank like kings!(The spare Ribs at Cederberg Oasis was LEGEND) Total cost 800 South African Rondts.. Stop bitching just go out and DO! I will only do multiple day events and pay. One dayers must be REALLY amazing for me to pay, jeez so much riding out there you can do with mates man! Make your own medal :-)

I unfortunately missed this one, we were out of town. I did think the entry of 180 was a biiiit steep, but acceptable, since I can ride 90% of that route any day. But was tempted to do it for the novelty and the bit down the other side of the mountain.

Now, one deemed successful event - and they DOUBLE the price?!  I see myself klapping Welvanpas on that day.

All for supporting the local scene, but this is just crazy. Yes, I said the same about the Burger/Stellenbosch Cycle Tour - and this is even more expensive. And no, I'm still not riding Burger on Sunday.

Oh, as for the improved prezzies for which you now pay more. No use flooding my goodie bag with that Zero goedjies, I've tried it and it does not work for me. My smallest-they-have-XL Rudy t-shirt from another event is still unworn in my cupboard. I can use it as a (loose-fitting) dress when we go to a cross-dressing fancy dress, but that's about it... so there goes that novel idea.

Seems I'm on a roll now. Maybe I should stop before I blister my fingers.

You should consider yourself lucky. You at least got a R20 bottle out of them.

Most of living up north paid R90 for a courier delivery that never arrived, and trust me there was no mention of a credit for that non delivery of the "race pack" (an envelope)..

The organisers of all these races are just in it for the cash, they don't give a stuff about us.

That would go for most yes.

Kind of makes one miss the old MTB events that the local areas rotary club or school would usually put up in various areas.

Also missed it this year, did the Langebaan mtb challenge. But you are 110% right. ANYBODY, can ride this route, 90 to 95 percent of it for about R30, anytime, anyday, without hundreds of other riders blocking your path.

These okes must be some sorta high, those prices are crazy.

EDIT: I am also not riding the Skelmbosch cycle tour,Burger, whatever, race on sunday.
