if you're going with a 40 / 42t on the cassette with a medium cage XT, might want to consider a RAD cage - http://www.oneupcomponents.com/products/r-a-d-cage.

I'm using a long cage non-clutch XT and it works great (on 34t + 11-36+42)

am but i've read mixed reviews.... some actually prefer the medium cage over the longer. i'll try and find where i read this!

still keen on getting the cage, seems cheaper on eBay though

Been riding 1x9 for years now but upgraded to 1x10 with slx clutch derrailler , xt shifter and moove narrow wide 32 front ring. The shifting is great, no chain loss so far but the best part is the SILENCE!!!

You read all the benefits in the comments here. If you want to give it a try for free just take off your shifter and set your front derailleur in the middle ring. It doesnt have the benefits of riding a 1x10 narrow-wide chainring, but it will give you an idea how the rides will feel like with only 1 chainring up front (wether you can make it and feel like you could do without the triple up front).

For me personally 1x9/1x10 is the way to go. The simpler the bike the better I like it and more i enjoy it (why i prefer my track bike over any road bike on flat roads).

Actually the perfect set up for me would probably even be a personally modified 1x7 drivetrain, made from a 1x10 set up, but with bigger intervals, but thats a whole other story.

I also can recommend the ONEUP RAD cage. Makes shifting on the extended XT cassette as crisp as you were used to.

Other tha that: yes OP, 1x10 is the way the go for many riding styles. Don't be out off by the very few exceptions. They don't apply to many.

Yes you can use the road sprocket.

There was a guy in MBA action that wrote in a while ago and did it.

Also you need to make sure you have either a Sram X5, X7 or X9 cassette or Shimano XT and above. I had SLX and had to swop with a mate who had X5.

The SLX cassette does not split up correctly to work.

Looking forward to the 1 x 10 conversion, should be completed next week.

For the past 2 months I've only been using my 32T chainring upfront so hoping it's gonna be a smooth transition.

Removing 15T and 17T at the back and adding 16T and 42T sprockets to my existing XT Cassette.

Question:

- Would the chain need to be lengthened? I'm using an XT clutch long cage rear derailer.

I used the standard XT chain, think its 116 links and it works fine. Dont forget to fit a longer B-screw otherwise you wont be able to get onto the 42t.

Your derailleur will work fine. In no time you'll actually want to upgrade to atleast a 34t on the front cause that 42t on the rear is really a lekker granny to have. Ive got a 36t on the front and I've survived the K2C, Bottelary Hills and Groenlandberg..

All of the best, you'll soon all be converts!
