Cleaning out removable valves blocked up wih tyre sealent?

Running tubeless tyres with removable valves.

Valves are blocking up with sealant.

I can still pump up the tyres with a track pump but its hard work and I'm not sure a bomb will work if I get a puncture! Also can't get a tyre pressure to show on the track pump.

New valves needed or can I clean these ones out somehow?

Cheers.

If it's removable core then not really too much of a problem, the cores are pretty cheap at your LBS. I keep 2 or 3 as spare anyway.

When I get to that stage I remove the core and use an old spoke to clean out the part left in the rim and push it carefully through the hole where it inflates into the tyre.

As for the old core well I have had minimal success cleaning them, once the sealant gets inside its impossible to get it out IMHO just replace.

Pieman's tip regarding Vaseline is a very good one but should be done from the first time it is inserted (i.e. before it gets gunked up) and every time it is removed for any reason. I do this or even use a bit of grease every time I remove it to top up the sealant.

If it's non removable core ...... well in my experience gooi weg #endvanprent

i got a mucked up core and didn't have a spare available. i thought the sealant was ammonia-based (from the smell of it), so I soaked the core in half a capful of cloudy ammonia for 15 minutes and was able to clear out the dry sealant. Not sure if this is the best thing to use, but worked well for me when I needed it. Now i carry 2 spare cores and a tubeless valve just in case.

1 Take an old cleat washer from your road bike shoes and make yourself a valve spanner.

2 Remove inner core of valve, by holding the valve with above spanner, and use pliers to turn/remove the nut.

3 Clear core and housing - the core itself is a handy tool to scrape the housing clean.

4 Replace core into housing. Hold housing with above spanner and screw nut back on.

Normally, once the nut is all the way on, it will again/still be difficult to remove again. I.e you will not accidentally screw it all the way off next time you open the valve to pump. However, if the nut can now unscrew too easily, hold the nut with pliers, and with core just protruding slightly, tap the end with a hammer to flatten the end a little.

Finish and klaar, piece of cake , I do it all the time.

I leave my spare cores in a holder with some thinners / paraffin.

Shake every now and then, but when I replace cores periodically they are good as new.

Hop this helps
