reasonable but could be better. For a hardtail it's pretty standard.

What would be a good angle to go to? Bike geometry is a bit new to me. With a bit of googling it seems that trail bikes should be 69 or less. So if (and assuming I can) I go down to 68.5, would that be good, or is too slack a problem?

Also spotted these...

Trail bikes should be around 67 or so. New reign and the current breed of ALL MOUNTAIN bikes are in the region of 65/66.

What Is your bottom cup diameter? I have an angleset in my spares box that fits a 49mm bottom cup and tapered steerer (can fit a straight steerer with a crown race reduce) Has the full complement of lower adapters so you have the choice of 0.5 / 1.0 / 1.5.

A grand and it's yours...

Ok cool, so seems the biggest angle headset is 1.5, so that will take me down to 68...

Took a quick  measurement with a tape measure and looks like 63mm bottom cup, but will rather grab a vernier from work when back to make double sure.

My head tube is tapered, top cup is smaller than bottom, but the steerer on the fork is straight.. That a problem?

63mm!!? Jeepers. You need to check the internal diameter to see if it'll fit.

Not a problem but you'll need a proper sized bottom cup for it to work properly. IOW : mine won't work for you.

What tires are you using? I reckon that if you not already running grippy tires pop on something like a 2.5 minion or 2.4 onza ibex in your front wheel. Will change your life!

Just upgraded from 2.2 race kings to 2.4 mountain kings and yes, HAS changed my life!! Can't believe the extra grip!

just remember that the bikes you are talking about are 650b and this is a 29er the Pyga 29er is considered a trail bike and that has a 69 degree head angle the Axis only has a 100mm travel for as well.

Yeah true, but the 110 is just so damn versatile. 110mm on the front and it's an xc shredmonster. Stick a 140mm fork on the front and it's a trail demon with a far more trail oriented head angle. And let's be honest here.... who has a 110 with the stock head angle now, anyway? That HA is with a 110mm fork.

But that's besides the point. A trail bike imo has between 120 & 150mm travel. Yes on a niner it's slightly different but 110mm travel is STILL 110mm travel. Head angle is still head angle. And imo a trail bike should not have a head angle of 69 degrees.
