Epic vs. Camber

IMHO 90% of Epic riders are on the wrong bike. A similar thing happened with the Merida 96. Everyone had to have a top "racing" bike. Until it started hurting their middle aged bodies, which resulted in rider bars and bar ends. Merida messed up and released the120 far too late.

The same happened on the road. Now years later some have only caught onto a slightly less aggressive head angle and a lot more comfort on long rides.

Long live comfortable bikes, long live.

my favourite Specialized is a Stumpjumper.. Best bike they build. Epic looks like a real XC race bike, Camber looks confused. Has a nice carry handle I see.

Stumpjumper.......hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

2015 Stumpy carbon EVO 650b frames going at fairly OK prices. It comes with Fox Factory Shock, dropper and headset. You can fit nice wide wheels, a Pike RCT3 and XT brakes/drive, carbon bars etc for about R50k all in (parts at current retail) .

If you have bits to build over its less but to get the best from it you have to invest in a decent 150/160mm fork.

Yeah? What sort of price you looking at?

Was quoted around 22k for a frame with shock, headset and dropper.

Looking for a frame to build over some 1 year old bits from my TB LTc so I can upgrade it.

But with the available Stumpy frames being 650b I couldn't build my 29er wheels, fork or partially used tyres over. Custom yoke on the Spez means I can't build the shock over either. Fun but not viable. If I already had a 650b trailbike tho......

Actually the 2015 650B stumpy frame is not great.  Its actually a 29 er front triangle with a reworked rear triangle.  The 2016 stumpy frame is redesigned from the ground up to be a proper 27.5 inch bike.  This is due to the fact that Spez initially wasnt keen on 650B but now is all in.  The best 2015bike they have is the camber Evo .  If you want a stumpy get the 2016 version

MuddyMike hit the nail on the head.

My 2c:

The Epic is a brilliant bike, BUT you should keep the following in mind - the Epic is designed to be a no-compromise, premium XC racing bike. Nothing more, nothing less. In my mind, the Epic is suited to riders who value outright speed over comfort, descending capabilities, etc. So, if you're mixing it up in the pointy end of the field or competing for podiums, it's the right bike for you.

I own a Camber and it truly is probably the most balanced bike on the (SA specific) market. It's brutally fast, efficient pedaller, has great descending capabilities and is super comfortable. It doesn't have that no-compromise feel of an Epic. It sacrifices, say, 5% pedalling efficiency for 15% more comfort, when compared to the Epic.

I have a theory that Spez doesn't supply the Camber with Brain suspension, as doing so would cannibalise the sales of the Epic. A Camber with Brain suspension tech would be nearly unstoppable on the majority of SA's trails.

The past weekend I was at Complete Cyclist in Bryanston, and one of the employees told me that one of the Camber 2016 models will be coming with the Brain. So maybe that unstoppable bike is going to be available sooner rather than later.

I have an Epic and enjoy it, I do descent times in races, but not Podium times. For me it is not a case of getting a podium, but being as fast as I can be.

The brain shock will only be standard on carbon models (except for the base carbon comp)

OK, here's the cat amongst the pigeons.

The Camber Evo is no more in 2016 - ALL 2016 Cambers will have Evo geometry (the head tube has been relaxed from 70degs to 68.5degs in the 29er / 68degs in 650b).

All models, except the base, will have 1x11 SRAM gearing and all will come standard with WIDE / 29mm roval rims.  Brakes all shimano, no formula or magura any more.

As mentioned, the Elite, Expert and higher models will have Brains BUT NOT the same as the Epic brain, as Spez says that the brain has been "trail tuned".

Also, the Camber is available in 2016 as a 27.5/650b designed from the ground up.  As I understand it, the 2015 27.5 camber was simply a 29er front triangle with a  redesigned rear.

Lastly, the 2016 Stumpy and 2016 Camber share a front triangle even though the Stumpy's head tube angle is a little slacker (67.5 / 67).

Spez are going to sell LOTS of Cambers. I was never a fan of the 2014/2015 models, but the 2016 seems a well sorted bike.

I don' think there was a 650b camber until 2016.
