Cycling in this wind

Where can we ride where the wind won't blow us away? We already rode at Tokai (still having heartburn because of the entry fee),did chappies, and redhill, but looking for a trail to ride. Are we allowed to ride the hiking trails? I see there is a lot around glencairn ect.

Suggestion. Pack a picnic lunch and some juice, lots of water (and then some more water), sun tan lotion and a lock for your bikes. Allow 3 or 4 hours. Leave the car and the bike rack at home.

Cycle from Simonstown round the coast to Fishhoek (downwind!). Then inland and up Ou Kaapse Weg (keep well to the left of the shoulder). At the top of Ou Kaapse turn left into the Silvermine reserve. Up to the gate and pay the man. You got to go in via this gate so you can buy a ticket. This is a National Park, so be good, pay your money and obey all the rules. You cycle up the tar road to the "cyclists parking", then through the parking to the start of "loop". Up the loop - the gradient will make you forget all about the wind. At the highest point, stop, push your bike off the jeep track along the foot path and park it somewhere. That's why you brought the lock. Not many folk around to pinch things, but it gives you peace of mind, which is the objective of the ride. Walk about 500m to the top of the peak. The views over Hout Bay, Kometjie and Chapmans Peak make it all worth while. Find a place to enjoy the picnic lunch and the juice. Relax till you are in the mood to head back down.

The loop is ridden one way, so carry on round and down again. The track is slippery, especially when dry and dusty and if you fall off the damage goes up at the square of your speed. You don't need skills to go fast here, just blind bravery, so rather slow down, take in the view, the flowers and the birds etc. Follow the signs past the lake at the bottom down a short single track, eventually back on the tar road and down to the gate.

But don't go out the gate. Turn right down and take the next track that runs down the hill to a point on Ou Kaapse Weg near the Noordhoek turn off. Then a "relaxing" ride home over the Gen Cairn express way. When you hit the wind, you are near the top. After that it is downhill.

By the time you get home you will have forgotten about the wind...

PS: If you try this on a day this time of the year when there is no wind, take triple the water in anticipation of temperatures over 40C.

So here we are,2nd week in simonstown, had awesome riding weather the first week, but now the wind is blowing like nobody's business. Where can we ride where the wind won't blow us away? The hiking trails are off limits to bikes.

Have a look at the Durbanville or Stellenbosch trails.

From experience, Durbanville/Tygerberg trails are no less windy. Luckily @ Meerendal, the wind normally helps to push you UP Dorstberg, but coming down it will do it's best to push you off the singletrack...

Now go ride Botlary hills. A single long look is about 60 to 70km with no doubling up and there is some awesome single track.

The wind is absolutely no issue and they have 2 water stops along the route. Well not a water stop but an official provides point with a tap with clean cool water.

There are also 3 restaurants at the entry points for you to chill at afterwards.

Warning it could get hot of there is absolutely no wind.
