First aid kit

I have never been stopped on a race or asked at the start where is my first aid kit. I have a feeling 90% of riders have nothing on them. If you see a person with a camelback then you are probably going to find they have the most sort of stuff with them.

It is not compulsory to carry one with you, it is just highly recommended.

That being said I could have used a normal plaster more than anything else here being mentioned. A tube with some cloth could probably also just about fix most problems. Sure it is not ideal but it will do the job until you get to a hospital/mortuary.

I just can't see a guy who spends R 1 000 000 000 000 getting his bike to under 8kgs taking half a kilo of medical supplies with him.

This is just my observation.

I guess for the most part if you get injuries and you can continue it could probably wait until you get to a water point or finnish and if there is something more serious a simple first aid kit is probably not going to help anyway.

So the question would really be do you want to carry first aid for minor scratches or just endure it until you get to a water point.

"Pack of Rough Riders met knoppies vir extra genot" - are those easy to fit, seat and inflate?

I think you have answered it right there. You cannot carry a hospital on you back and who cares if you get a scratch!!!

Some scratches bleed like the proverbial stuck pig.. I have one on my forearm from a rock scratch that nicked a vessel (foot stuck in muddy cleat) and I toppled over stopping for the traffic jam in front of us on the epic... nothing like a tampon and a zip tie for that.... :)

OK - I did use a flat wound dressing... :) but the poor bastard behind me was a bit pale afterwards - totally minor accident, could have had big consequences, but didn't because of having some minor stuff along for the ride - but there is no need to pack the whole pharmacy...

I do keep the odd medication in my bag though - space permitting.

I usually carry a roll of sports wrap, the sticky bandage type. It can be used to strap things like ankles and wrists and works wonders stopping big cuts. I don't bother with dressings as I always carry a bit of white gold which doubles as dressing. Light and effective.

add a couple of tampons and you are good - tampons are good for puncture wounds - like a brake lever in the leg etc... doen't often happen, but useful to have around - even if you just jam it in a big wound and tape closed.

Im impressed with this thread...

No one mentioned a teaspoon of cement?

Any brand will do.

OK - white plaster of paris....works better than cement for broken bits.... :)

Few std plasters, a big mofo plaster, bandage and a sealed suture kit. .....never used this or trained how to use it, but have stitched up a couple of tyres and made a couple of cell phone covers out of thick leather with needle and thread with a neat stitch. ....Also been stitched up enough times with or without painkillers to get the jest of how to roughly close up a couple of flaps of skin to help stop the bleeding in an emergency till the professionals get on the scene.

I understand that a sanitary pad is also good to have on hand for cuts/stopping bleeding. Space blanket and a whistle.

What I used to have was duct tape wrapped around my pump for a emergency too....think of it as a big plaster [emoji14]....Need to wrap some again.

Painkillers. .....really. .....htfu till you get proper medical attention.

That's it... only thing to pack. and small enough to keep in your pocket. I dunno about the plaster of paris though.... if you put that in a clear little bag you might get arrested...

btw same goes for baby powder to carry with you for opposite effect.... :P
