The problem with Conti is they're so ****** tight to get on/off the rim. I've broken a few tyre levers.

9/10 times it is not the tyres but the rims.

Any duel fit rime (clincher and tubeless) will be VERY tight.

I had a set Campy Euros Two way fit rims.  Impossible to fit a tyre without a swear word.

Sold them and got normal Euros.  No issues.

Gatorskins, Kena Kontenders and Sefas Secas.

All good candidates.

What is the prices on the other two tyres?

Ai, Ai, Ai. How many times do I have to tell you people the same thing?

If it touches the tar or holds air ~ Continental.

If it stops the bike, has gears, or operates gears ~ Shimano.

Problem solved.

I had 6 punctures on one ride some time back.  Used both spare tubes and bombs, then people were stopping to donate tubes and bombs.  Eventually had to push the bike back the last 10kms. Was ready to give up riding!  Turned out to be the rimtape.  If you have your old tubes, check if the puncture is on the inside or outside of the tube.  That will tell you where the problem is.

Had the same problem. Kept getting punctures even with the gatorskins. 2 punctures in the space of 13km at the 2013 94.7. Checked the rimtape, replaced and no problem ever since.

Yeeeaaaah, but at least we agree on the Continentals

+ 1 to gatorskins, changed my life back in the day when I changed to them. Before them (the dark days) I used to buy the lekker cheap red tires that matched my trek 1200, looked cool but I had to ride with 2 spare tubes.

If I look back when I started cycling the most useful information I could have gotten would have been to buy proper tires and pump them to the correct pressure.

On a final note, if you are not worried about rolling resistance or weight the specialized armadillo could be a winner.

I run GP4000 Chilli's @ 120psi (my training and racing tyres don't take bar!). Haven't had a puncture for well over a year. Run 'em too low and you'll suffer over and over again plus it'll handle like arse.

I also keep my new sets of tyres in a darkened room (aka a garage / store room) all unfurled and hanging up. I also rotate them a bit to make sure the natural oils all keep near the surface. Not sure if it helps but it used to be and old mechanics tale to make sure the rubber was prime.

Next wheels though will be tubeless. The way forward.

I heard that 2012 was a good year, the colour of the rubber was a deep charcoal and that they fit to the rims with a good snap, with the slightest hint of sulphur as the tyre deflates.

Bwaaahahahaha... for sure!

No jokes, those are 2012's hanging up and on my wheels. Got a batch when CWC were selling them on a proper special for R299 a go.

Not sure when i'm going to test the theory as both my training and race tyres are still in great nick and trucking on.

Started road biking a bit more and I am soooooo sick of punctures!!!! What tyres do u guys use that are reasonably priced, gives good mileage and is puncture resistant and not too heavy?

Some tyres are better than others with regard to punctures, but irrespective of tyre brand, you should not be getting so many punctures(unless you are riding in thorn patches).

As mentioned above, your biggest culprit is low tyre pressure or your rim tape. Another thing not mentioned, when repairing the previous puncture did you make sure you removed the thorn (or whatever) that caused the puncture in the first place?

The foldable Gatorskins cost a bit more, but they're much easier to get on and off, and they're lighter too.  They can be difficult to find in SA though.

I get about 1 puncture / 10 000 km / tyre.  My back tyres wear out after about 10 000 km, and the front tyre is going strong after 30 000 km.

Look at the maxis refuse ,very good reviews.

I can vouch for maxxis refuse. I have a chappie orange set that has about 4000km on, and not a single puncture. Excellent training tyre; not exactly fast rolling and heavy'ish. makes you ssstrrrongggg.
