Is there a standard for which side the front brake lever goes on?

My new bike has it on the left, my old bike had it on the right - I'm scared for my first emergency situation!

Edit: my old bike had it on left, my new one has it on right.

The Shifters (on MTB) can be only one way around (Front Left and Rear Right). I prefer to have my brakes the same way around.

I've heard that some motor-bikers prefer to swap them around so that the Front Brake is on the right (like with the Motor bike).

This is my exact reasons for righ = front, but seems too be the opposite of the industry standard.

It's all down to personal preference.

Having the front brake on the left hand side makes more logic sense to me (as it's related to the front derailleur) and rear-brake with the rear-derailleur.

I agree - I was surprised when I bought a new bike "off the shelf" and it came the other way around - was I supposed to specify?

Well, so far, a whole lot of answers contradicting each other ...

There is no standard as the answers have shown, use which ever way you are more comfortable.

Why not just swap them over?

Nearly all new bicycles sold in South Africa will have the back brake on the right. Most motorcyclists change that around. Strangely, I'm quite happy with the back on the right side even with years of Enduro off-road riding and daily commuting to work on a motorbike for over 8 years where the front brake is on the right.
