Bike Theft - Where to Next?

It's now an issue on my mind whenever I ride or transport bicycles to the point of paranoia. Next step is one of those alarm locks.

BUT, it may be that the better we secure the bikes when stored the more likely it becomes that they are stolen by hi-jacking.

The people who steal these bikes and attack riders won't stop until they feel the risks are too high. It's like shooting fish in a barrel for them. There was a security company in a little eastern Cape Town that uses to escorts criminals to a little spot 100km from anywhere and leave them there after a friendly chat. They still got repeat offenders.

Either the bike itself needs to be a risk to them, or the consequences for steeling one needs to make the act unthinkable.

I'm thinking team up with the tow truck drivers or something. Like, if you steel a bike, these guys will be looking for you. I'm happy to contribute to such a bike recovery partnership fund.

Philosophy and humanity doesn't work.

In China 55 crimes are eligible for the death penalty.

Because with large populations comes massive crime potential.

And people respect the law there!

Only 1 deterrant works - FEAR.

And until criminals or potential criminals are fearful of the consequences of their actions in this country again, I am afraid my friends, there is NO hope, no matter how positive your attitude, or how great you think SA is.

Not all of us live on another plane of existence in gilded cages, in security estates.

The solution starts with the government of the day, but since they are committed to creating employment rather than fight crime, for ALL the citizens who voted them into power, including the thieves, murderers, rapists, fraudsters, corrupt public officials, reckless taxi drivers etc, etc, etc ad nauseum, we are all fighting a battle we cannot win.

Vote them out??? NOT A CHANCE!!!! We had one chance at free and fair elections, and that was in 1994 - its fixed from now on - ANC will rule for 200 years, just like Zanu PF.

Check out the list below - and if you are able, start looking at other options - I was the biggest naysayer to emigration in '94-'96 when all my mates left, and 20 years of trying to be positive and trying make a contribution has only gotten my family and I robbed, and beaten, and mugged and assaulted and screwed in the workplace, and we now live in fear and uncertainty everyday.

Can't fart in the streets there, would be curious to know what crime is actually like over there and how safe people are

Pretty safe - been there, the people are great. Great country, if you can get past the communism.

The fact that YOU can't fart in the streets there(or in Thailand, or Vietnam, or Australia) means NOBODY farts in the streets there.

Its just a little fart , right? My democratic right!

Well its just a little smoking in a public place, right?

And its just a little littering, right?

And its just a little drunk and disorderly in public right?

And then its just a little argument with a person whose opinion differs from mine right?

And its just a little scuffle with person whose opinion differs from mine, right?

And its just a little assault of aforementioned person right?

And its just a little stabbing of the person who doesn't agree with me, right?

And Its just a little murder/manslaughter of that incorrigible idiot who just doesn't agree with me, right?

And while I am here, its just a little rape of his wife while I am at it - I mean, that's no worse than the murder, right?

You let small things, that really aren't OK, go unpunished and pretty soon you are letting the bigger crimes become trivialised too.

This is EXACTLY what has happened in SA!

But since we ALL break the speed limit - and its convenient, and we ALL throw our cigarette butts out the car window - and its convenient- and we ALL have crossed over that red traffic light late at night - because there was no traffic and it was safe to do so, and we ALL have committed the small crimes at some point in our lives, we think its "not so bad" and "what could it hurt".

And THAT is where the indifference and apathy toward a law abiding society begins, unfortunately.

I did not say I don't agree/disagree I was pointing out I wonder how effective the death penalty is as a deterrent if there are 55 crimes that will get you executed

I 100% understand how small crimes escalate and people become numb to right and wrong and the fact that you need to BABY SIT humans to keep them inline

Sorry my name is dipslick and a poep in the street when no one is around ;)

I poep in the street EVEN IF people are around - just to see their reactions. It still isn't against the law, so I am taking advantage while I can.

But when we emigrate, I will start to take pills for my flatulence, because the reason I am leaving is to live in a law abiding society - even if it is perceived as a "police state", and if I want that, then I have to be that. Its starts with me. I stopped skipping the red traffic lights a few years back, as I realised I really have no right to complain if I do the very thing I complain about.

I am fairly certain there is plenty of crime in China - I just saw a peaceful society that gets on with it and produces effectively, even though there are millions more poor and potential criminals over there. Whether its just a more civilised and evolved ethic and society or the threat of death penalty, I am not 100% certain. But even though people are poor, they all seemed to work in some manner. And the locals I was in contact with did not have any of the complaints and fears that I hear from our SA citizens, regardless of race, colour or creed. Its much harder over there, as their population is so huge, but people take responsibility for themselves and their lot in life, and don't always find someone else or something else to blame for not being privileged. Unlike most Saffa's (even me - but I am working on that)

But all philosophy aside, is there seriously no-one on this Hub that can design a tracking device that can be fit inside a bicycles tubing?

If I was an electronics ou, I would be a multi millionaire by now!!!

Or has it been done?...

You are a wise man Sir. Well said, and I agree 100 percent with you. I want to smack people against the head when they come with the " do something about it instead of complaining" nonsense. We have neighbourhood watch in our area, working men and women who patrol at night, struggle during the workday because of lack of sleep. They are catching loads of thieves and scumbags, handing them over to the Police, thinking, great job. Only for them to be out on bail the next day. Pointless.

Most cars are fitted with Trackers, yet they still get stolen and hijacked. You can track your car to an inch of where it is, problem is, are you going to fetch it? The Police sure as hell are not going to.

That's what the tracking companies should be paid to do, not so?

Without Police assistance, their hands are cut off. They LOCATE your car, to recover it, is a different story.

I disagree. This is known as the slippery slope fallacy and is completely illogical. Small crimes do not lead to big crimes. Certain people have a tendency to act in rebellious ways or with criminal intent. If given the opportunity they will partake in any action that seems relevant at the time.

Think about how many murders and rapes are by first time offenders. Much of the time their criminal offense cannot be attributed to a buildup of smaller offenses over time.
