Drilling heavy stem

The Giant OD2 Contact stem on the Trance 2 is one tough piece of metal and no doubt very safe but....it is also flippin heavy with thick walls. The unique size steerer tube/head that Giant put into their frames means I cannot (reasonably easily) source a light stem from mainline manufacturers.

I am considering drilling some neat holes along the sides to try drop some weight (even if it in the mind only). I know I could lose this weight by drinking less wine - but where's the fun in that?

Any thoughts from Hubbers?

A new stem is cheaper than a dentist.

Scratch that, a new fork and headset to convert to standard tapered is still cheaper than a dentist.

the new gold replacement teeth will weigh more than the weight saved in drilling the stem

Why stop at the stem?

The only reason that frame will stay in 1 piece is because it's an old Cannondale, when they still built bikes that lasted a life time.

Oh and OP, probably not too wise to be drilling your stem.

you can try titanium bolts - made my stem 70mm Giant Stem 120g - nothing heavy about that...

any lighter and it surely would affect strength... a superlight SC WING KCNC 80mm stem weighs 93g so 27g for a bit more beef and piece of mind is better don't you think?

Ek se my china, I wos lyke not joking hey? Guess i'm just dumb.....(no comments please)

Seems I might have to bite the "cable" on this one. Got a good dentist but he's too expensive for this type of tooth replacement challenge

Why stop at the stem?

I feel the same about my former lover, a 1995 Kona with the then good butter smooth Marzocchi 4" fork. Multiple endo's, washouts and drop outs at the old quarry in Honeydew and I still sold it in full racing order.

Anybody remember the IRC Mythos tyres back then? As grippy as today's Racing Ralphs
