Exposed brake and gear cables - WHY?

Why do some manufacturers expose sections of brake and gear cables but others don't?

On the kids bikes it causes big *** being exposed as a puddle of mud has to be ridden through.

if I replace them with full casing will there be other problems?

Weight saving, and because it been done like that since the dawn of time, when I would guess the friction of full outer cables would have affected shift performance to a degree.

I cant see any other reason than weight and habit like spoke said.

Nope just go ahead and do it. Have successfully modified a number of bikes this way with zero adverse effect on shifting. Reduce maintenance and cable replacement. Be careful as it might place frame warranty at risk.

full housing and more lately internal cabling are very new concepts.

am very happy to have done from internal cabling back to external cabling with as little housing as possible, easier to clean the cables, less housing means less place for grit to get trapped in and then a quick and painless cable replacement operation if you work on your bike yourself.

No worries of this as its a 4 year old Kids 20" Titan.

Replaced the brake cables for fully covered ones.

The weekend will tell if he can stop any better.

Thanks all for advise.

Time to revive this old thread ....

I am about to replace the cables on a Mongoose, classic old 3x9 bike with the exposed sections and short sections of external cables.

I want to go full length on the external sleeves, but not sure how to work around the current cable brackets on the frame :

Rear - post-110956-0-63946100-1555255908_thumb.jpg

I have been told to drill out the bracket in order to feed the full length outer cable through ....

The frame is due for a repaint, so it opens the opportunity to do some work on the brackets.

It is an aluminium or similar metalic frame.

I will appreciate feedback from people that have gone down this road.

PS - for this revamp the gearing wont be changed.  But the gearing may well be upgraded a year down the road, possibly going 1x at that time.  Not in the budget now ....

Drilled mine on my old GT, used a small battery drill and a nice sharp drill bit.....

No issues.

Thank you

How do you keep the cables taught in the frame ?

On that frame id just go all out and drill some holes in it and go full internal. Then grind off those brackets since youre respraying anyway.
