STOP OR SLOW DOWN

A car slows down at a stop sign and keeps driving. A cop sees him and pulls him over.

The cop asks, "Why didn't you stop?"

The man says, "I slowed down."

The cop pulls out his nightstick and starts beating him. "Now," the cop says, "do you want me to stop or slow down?"

Lets be honest most of us already do the slow down when approaching a stop sign and roll through if its safe to do so.

I will 90% of the time wait for the traffic light to change green unless its really early in the morning(5am cycle) and there are no oncoming traffic.

So this makes total sense but I will most likely be abused by a handful of douche-bags in this country.

Hi there douche-bag one here. Oncoming traffic is not the problem for you trust me. It's like that saying its not the fall but the hitting the ground you should be afraid of...

I presume you meant if there is NO traffic... ;)

Interesting and thought provoking article. Personally I'm one for obeying the law. If they ever change the law to this, I would most likely obey that too. Can it work is SA? Only trying it will tell. How about getting a forward thinking place like Cape Town to do a trial and legalize it for a period of say a year and get a masters town planning student to study it? Will our government ever change the law to this? I don't think so. Good and relevant article.

If some motorists don't even know that laws exist for bicycles on the road (the "he/she was cycling in my lane, bicycles aren't allowed on the road" argument comes to mind), how are they now suddenly going to know that different laws exist for bicycles and other vehicles?

If the average SA motorist has a fanny wobble about lane splitting on a motorbike 20 years after it was made legal, what difference is changing the law going to make to perceptions?

Just stop at the flippen light and stop whining.

No offence to Tayyib but for some reason I expected this to be a Carbonboy initiated thread

None taken! My intention was no to start a mud flinging contest.i spend alot of time trying to convince people why cyclists aren't as bad as we're made out to be...as is often said, people just need to be more tolerant of one another...and spread the love! For every person you can convince to give that extra bit of space on the road to cyclists the safer we'll be.

Ofocurse there is a point at which we're not nice anymore, like when we race down Main Road Kalk bay, soema 4 abreat, through red lights at pedestrian crossings and hold up traffic till Kirstenhoff!

...but just change the law to allow 140km/h and EVERY bloody Dick Tom and Harry who ever got behind a steering wheel will know about it and be doing 160 km/h before nightfall the same day!

i'm curious: exactly why can't a cyclist come to a complete stop at a stop street or red robot? What exactly is the difficulty here?

Exactly what i was thinking.... if you know how to train you can get to better open roads and can stop here and there on your way there and back (see it as warmup and warming down). Lights are for everyone using the roads... so stop means stop !

I cant understand the difficulty obeying a Robot or stop. You will moer your child senseless if he/she does it (I will) cause its dangerous yet you want to do it.
