Why cyclists should be allowed to run reds

Thought some people may take interest in this article. Alot may say this rule would not work in this country, and may even cause tensions to rise in the car vs cyclist battle instead of bringing a peaceful outcome. ..Be interesting none the less to hear comments.

Personally I think there's pros and cons and am unsure if I'd approve of the law.

Lets be honest most of us already do the slow down when approaching a stop sign and roll through if its safe to do so.

I will 90% of the time wait for the traffic light to change green unless its really early in the morning(5am cycle) and there are no oncoming traffic.

So this makes total sense but I will most likely be abused by a handful of douche-bags in this country.

i'm curious: exactly why can't a cyclist come to a complete stop at a stop street or red robot? What exactly is the difficulty here?

Some have not mastered the clip/unclip thing.

At least this gives science and some logic to the stop street/red light argument... rather than other people break the law, so I can attitude

A traffic cop in germiston once pulled me over for not stopping at a STOP sign on my bicycle and very nicely said in a heavy Afrikaans accent:

Meneer! STOP does not mean PAUSE

I wish I had known about the Idaho stop at the time

No offence to Tayyib but for some reason I expected this to be a Carbonboy initiated thread

Haha, I saw the title and had exactly the same thought. And then I saw the article which in a mature society may actually be viable

I think maybe that a yield on left turn through red/stop is a better option - this works well in the USA for cars too.
