Cycling On Antibiotics

Recommended Posts

So, I had the unfortunate procedure of having my wisdom teeth ripped out of my mouth yesterday evening. I'm currently in no state to ride due to severe pain and my general state of drowsiness. However, the doctor said I should be good to ride by Saturday morning if I feel up to it. He did also put me on a course of antibiotics that I only finish on Monday. I've heard doing serious exercise on antibiotics isn't the best idea? I really don't want to mess up my training or put myself in any danger.

Anyone with any experience with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My uninformed opinion would be that you will be okay as you are not sick. Antibiotics might be to help avoid infection. Dont think the doc will gibe you the go ahead if there were to be any danger.

That's sort of what I thought, but have heard some stories of people really suffering as antibiotics tend to make you weaker while you on them. I'm probably just gonna ride anyway and assess it as I go, if I feel bad can just turn around I guess.

Just ring up the doc. Get hold of V12man. He will give you an informed opinion

Stewart is just lucky he is in the cape dr v12 always starts his diagnosis with "when last you had your prostrate check" :0

I was about to suggest that Iamstuart asks Dips for advice as he knows it all

My also uninformed opinion is that the problem is when you are given antibiotics for a viral infection, like flu, for which antibiotics are actually totally useless, is where you run into major problems. Where they are useful is for a bacterial infection which I would guess is your situation. I believe it is the weakening of the heart be the virus that is most risky.

Theoretically the biggest issue is the infection not the antibiotics normally. In your case you say its more a precaution as you are not sick. However I have trained whilst on antibiotics a couple of times and can honestly say that those sessions have never helped much in terms of fitness. Antibiotics will affect the way you feel when heart rate is raised for 2-3 days after the course ends. My opinion based on the above is not to ride. But like I said, just an opinion.

I went for a checkup (don't ask more question about this) and after a week and 3 days went to do the alpine race in Nigel. I will never attempt a hard ride at least 3 weeks after a checkup\antibiotics. This was the first time ever I had a DNF.

Its not worth it. When my HR went above 160bpm I could hardly keep my balance and was very nausea. You won't loose much fitness if you do slow rides for 2 weeks.

Better safe than sorry
