Fox RP2 XV DIY service

Hopefully by now all the smart asses have gone home and I can get a decent response.

Just wanting to see if there is anyone out there that has attempted a full service (Not just the aircan) on a Fox RP2 or RP23.

Saw a thread om Mtbr Forum that seemed easy enough to follow.

My rebound and Pro Pedal are currently not working. All the bike is good for at the moment is a spin around the driveway with the kids. It's like riding a pogo stick. My guess is that after letting it stand for over a year after some surgery that I had, it could just need a clean and some new oil. Everything worked fine before I parked it off.

I released all the air from the compression side and cycled the shock a few times hoping for a result but to no avail. I phoned for a price for a service and was quoted R1200 for a complete service.

The budget is very tight at the moment so either I DIY this thing or it stands for the next few months.

I have seen a cutaway section of the shock and it seems simple enogh to dissasemble. The only problem that I could forsee is the 300Psi in the Nitrogen chamber....

Ja, apparently its only getting nitrogen back in thats the main headache. I have a RP23 so I am also interested.

In that link, there are a few links but one of them shows you a mod that uses a Schraeder valve on the Nitrogen chamber that you can connect a shock pump up to. Being able to adjust the pressure in the chamber could allow an infinite amount of tuning possibilities....

Note the valve at the bottom...

THIS link shows a step by step but my firewall has blocked the pictures so I can't vouch for how good it is.

Great info in there. Apart from the usual air can service I've never actually stripped the Fox float completely, but I remember JB telling me that the one small O-ring is a PITA to get seated and you only really know if it working once you pressurise the whole system again.

I'm also keen to give this a go at some time as I have a shock knocking about in the box somewhere in the shed.

You've also got to find that O-ring. There are 2 in there that aren't readily available and have to be imported by the hundred from the States.

The other things you'll need are a 9mm or 9.5mm shaft clamp to get to the rebound adjuster rod that the O-ring sits in, a needle that connects to a pump, and the patience of a sloth to figure out how to get the air to stay in when you pull the needle out.

Lastly you'll need the info on the IFP depths and charge pressures for the various models and lengths of shock available, which are particularly important for the boost valve models. These are, incidentally, also the only ones that you can do any kind of useful tuning on with IFP pressure.

Good luck. If you get stuck, you know where to find me. I don't charge school fees unless you've stripped or broken something.

This thread has a host of info on Fox maintenance. Just read through the RP23 rebuild one and it looks very do-able as long as you can get your hands on the valve. I think a trip to MiDAS/Autozone or a scrap yard might be in order.....

Gregg - if you want to send it down to Droo, my OH is coming up to durbs on Thursday so I can ask her to bring it back, then send it back to you via post net When droo has finished...

I can just do the damper for you, it'll cost about as much as getting a clamp made up for the damper shaft. You'll have plenty of change from your 1200 ZAR.

I can get the clamp made mahala once I see what's inside and I can figure out what I need ;) Mate has a machine shop. You still game? :D

Seriously though, I'll give you a call tomorrow to discuss. Please can you PM me a contact number?

Thanks. I might just take you up on that offer. Going to chat to droo tomorrow hopefully and we'll take it from there. All dependant on the cost.... I got school fees to pay next month..........

Wish the full service was easy to diy, have heard the oring on the rebound shaft is one of the tough ones to find a suitable replacement and fit it. Shock service is probably one of those things a hardcore but wise diyer sends to the pros like Droo to sort out.

Hds in strydom park have most sizes of o rings available - and they sell in tiny quantities - might be worth a call if you know the size.

if they have and wont post, let me know. I will send them for you.

A second set of hands helps hugely when trying to remove the needle without breaking it off and nip up that grub screw.

There truly are still good people out there in this wonderful world of ours...

Just a quick thank you to the El Capitan clan for assisting with the transport and to droo at Stoke Suspension for servicing my shock

Thanks guys! Much appreciated! Finally going to be able to swing my leg over my bike and go for a ride.

Bike is back together and all is working great. I figured out that my Pro Pedal never worked from day one....

It works now though

Thanks again!!

(Still keen to try the DIY thing... Anybody with a shot RP2/23 lying around that they want to donate as a science project, PM me, my mailbox is never locked ;)  )

I might have chucked it eventually but I'll check when i get home, needed replacement bushings at the time but in the end it never got used, didn't pay silly money for it either.

Happy to cover the postage! Alternatively, I have family and mates on the East Rand (Benoni) if that would be easier?
