Have a look at the following much more scientific visual graphics. Hamstring muscle group consists of Biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus.......they all play a part in hip extension (and knee flexion). Together with Gluteus Maximus, they form part of the pedal down stroke.

Learning to use your hamstrings more effectively can improve the pedal efficiency, which can contribute to an increase in power, that can contribute to a enhanced average speed.

Yes, flatout on the back wheel.

 

As for the diagram above, i fail to take anything serious that has the word "rectus" in.

 

Now, before the red mod-pen decorates my post:

 

Pedalling through the pain after cresting a climb, has made the biggest difference for me. And attacking the climbs instead of letting the climbs thrash me...

I took the Garmin off my bike.

Now I decide what my average was after a ride.

I'm always very satisfied with the result

 

I like that steady 2-3km/h increase you have been getting lately

I started out cycling last year and when i began my avg was low around 20-21lph. I have noticed 2 jumps in my average so far. from 21kph to 24-25kph and now i am currently doing an average of 28-29.5kph...hoping to break that 30kph mark soon.

 

What worked for me.

 

1. Loose weight.

2. 30min rides doing Cadence drills (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

3. 30min slow rides in the heavy gear concentrating on your pedal stroke. Push / pull. (Tuesday, Thursday)

4. one Long ride per week with at least one section where you push like hell for 10km. (Sunday)

5. When you find yourself cycling against a head wind - Dont go to the granny gear. Push hard or stay at least it the harder gear.

 

Take a rest week every 4th week.

Edit - i cycled the same route and distance for each workout type. Have to compare apples with apples.

Buy a Specialized bike...ups the average with atleast 3km/h. :ph34r:

One does not merely increase average speed by purchasing the bike. It is imperative to add matching gloves, lid, shirt, bib, sox, shoes and panties.

I tried that for ages and it never worked for me, I figured in the end that pushing a harder gear slower is my thing. Same speed but less fatigue... maybe Im just unusual like that.

avearge speed is very subjective, different routes, weather conditions play a huge role.

some of my best days on a road bike have 23kph averages. sometimes its because I'm cruising and other days its because its hill repeats.

 

hell, traffic, stop streets all get in the way of a 'good' average. riding in a goup can pick it up.

 

I usually never get home with an average over 26-7 kph when I ride (usually alone) but that doesn't mean that I cant or dont ride at 40kph on the flat, in fact I never really push that hard on the flats. But you know what I mean, I wont do a 5 hour argus even though all my training rides are averaged at 25.5 kph

IM WITH YOU ON THAT ONE SOME PEOPLE SPIN LIKE WASHING MACHINES OTHERS GRUNT OUT THE STROKES

i checked on virtual training(races) some washing machines spin like 2 stroke engines, others like tractors, i think you can only change that to a point,

Simple trick I saw on youtube was to concentrate on areas where you are braking. I.e. Are you braking in a corner or turn where maybe with improved skill you won't have to brake. The result of this through 1 single turn/corner might be negligible but over the course of a 4/5 hour ride, you could save yourself a couple minutes without evening working on your fitness.

So true... if you brake you have waiste energy... therefore improve in you technical skill - conering ect..

Ride alternate lines, don't just follow everyone else's line. Often the most popular line ends up being the bumpiest especially where people brake before corners and down hills but the majority of riders will still use that line...try keep a little left or right where it is often smoother and faster.
