Patchelicious will I find you at the back of VA ?

Well, I had to rush back to Jozi lastnight and left my road bike in CPT (was there to do the 99er) and have decided to leave it there for Tour de Boland, so was thinking of doing this on my MTB for the heck of it, but won't start in VA on MTB might get a few weird looks :)

You can hope! As long as AL is by itself going down the steps it's manageable, for the open groups this section is about the most dangerous riding I've come across in all the events I've done.  Fast, narrow, bumpy oncoming traffic, merged groups, frantic attempt to get to the front as the break happens at the bottom of that slope.

Hi,

My first R4S in years so can you explain , where in race is these steps.

Would appreciate so I can try and avoid being in wrong place.

EarlIier part of the race. Heading west from the start you go underneath the N3 Durban highway bridge near Alberton. Just after the bridge you turn left and and ride south. About 5 kms from that turn ,the dual road narrows to single with a long downhill.  The Steps. Named so because of the profile . Being dropped there on the reverse is a regular occurrence in my cycling life.

Joe is right. Big groups and some braking as riders on the right get back into the bunch as cars approach.

Slow to post, Scotty's  strava thingy explains it so much better.

I really hope they don't try and use the traffic cones like they did last year. That made the first few kms interesting but the last few kms was hair raising when trying to dodge traffic cones, the shorter distance riders and general traffic while racing towards the finish.

Ja flip that was an epic fail. Going down the hill at the start in the emergency lane with on coming traffic was hair raising.

Can't we ask/request smaller group? I keep on forgetting the steps but I normally change down attacks or attack myself. This year it will be different. May be start thinking of dropping back to be in the front.

so glad im in Elites this year and not AL, had to bunny hop twice last year of the road to stay safe

In the mrs, group only 5 peeps in JL didn't come down after a crash at 15 km, luckily she was one of them.

Will see you guys there, hopefully in a new kit, hopefully in elites I can break that ellusive sub3 this year

Any word on how you say the seeding is up? Racetrack says no ways?

Be ready for that Elite bunch, they are very fast over the first 30 and the bunch moves a lot. Keep to the front on the steps and hang on for dear life through heidelberg. If you survive all that, then get ready for gutters all the way to the sprint.
