When you join a road cycling club the first that happens they show you the culture....

which includes

droppign your sorry ass on the first ride

didn't work...?

then you feel strong enough to voice ideas. and everyone goes "i think we got a live one here boys..."

before you know you running red lights and doing epo

Seriously??

I know about being dropped on a ride, but surely there must be some formal communication regarding behavior etc. After all they will be representing the club!!

can anyone tell me if this is a universal cycling problem? The red light issue Not the seriously juvenile name calling this thread deteriorated into

I have no beef with CL or any other club for that matter; read the thread and not 30 minutes laterhad this beaut right in front of me at 15:30 today at the intersection of R304 & Bottelary. Anyone who has ever cycled this road knows its playing Russian roulet to get through here in one piece. So what does monsieur do.... Red light, he is standing in the middle of the lane right in front of me (which he is entitled to) but nope, red light is taking to long for his liking, there are arrows letting left-oncoming traffic turn off into the road he intends to go into (crossing from Simonsig into Bottelary) So lets just cruise over the entire intersection on red and dash for the gap between two cars turning left.

The photo is pretty crappy, but he is kitted out top to bottom in some club/ corporate gear. So merde manners is most definitely not restricted to clubs or group rides. Solos get it rightbjust as well.

Point is, I ride a bike; have been for 31 years, not much good at it but love it. So I see cyclist and I make sure to watch them on the road- because a massive amount of them are intent on becoming a bumper ornament.

This is not being incensitive to those who have been involved in accidents; but I for one is beyond tired of hearing motorist this motorist that... but when going out on rides with mates its ok to break road rules, not thinking for one second that riding three abreast might make you feel like el-mano but getting smashed by 3 tons of metal from behind wont end well for you. Period.

Honestly guys, just start taking responsibility and ownership of your own road manners first.

Ps1: sorry for jacking the post

Ps2: i really dont care for the "we jump lights and stop streets because" brigade, this topic has been had before. You are wrong period.

formal behaviour and herd mentality are poles apart. Sunday rides involve cracking every rider weaker than you are one by one.

and people wonder why club members are hard to retain. Riding with a club can be a much more dangerous undertaking than riding with a small group of friends

Oh please do! and make sure you don't edit out the all the other cyclists who jump robots, ride 4 abreast, pass when it isn't safe to do so, don't wear helmets, stop in the middle of the yellow lane to ensure that no-one can get round, drop gu/goo/whatever packets on the the road, ride the wrong way up the mountain bike path, shout abuse at other riders passing because they feel they have the right to own the road etc etc etc!. Hell I'm sick to death of people constantly lambasting Cyclelab! yes I do ride with them, Yes I do marshal for them, yes I do my damndest to keep people in line, yes I take it as a personal affront when people keep knocking the club because they saw someone doing something wrong. Why don't we open a thread where we can post every single jersey that we see that does something wrong road. There isn't a single club or group that hasn't at one stage or another broken cycling rules. No-one is that good! The difference is, I try, we try, the club really does try to get people to ride safely and as correctly as possible. No I don't work for them, I just try enjoy my rides on a weekend! And yes, I do shout out when other riders go through the red robot, cause sure as your grandma sucks eggs, someone will blame cyclelab on Monday.

I will edit my video to make the hallowed CL riders look like excrement :-)

Someone please answer this for me as I am not aware if it is done or not!

When you join a cycling club/ or rather a road cycling club, Do you get papers that you sign stating rules and regulations  expected behavior of the club and its members?

Are the rules of the road on this paperwork? If not Then at least a single page stating road behavior and etiquette should be handed out and signed etc etc etc.

Surely there are individuals on these group rides that can be educated or even better have another group where they can all be shown x y z.

I'm part of a very well run club from the east rand and we get a weekly email from the chairman with route updates for weekends and race info and so on. The first paragraph of the email each week is the below

Safety:

In Club rides:
Please note we are to ride 2 abreast on roads where there is space to do so , and single file on the tighter smaller roads. Please could everyone make a concerted effort to stop at red lights , especially the major intersections , and to be more courteous to other road users.

Let’s try keep the groups together and let’s wait at all the designated spots to regroup and wait for the support vehicles to catch up.

But unfortunately despite the chairman and the other members best efforts you always get one or two chops that think they know better.

Like I said previously I don't ride for CL but another club, so have no reason to rant or rave about them. But I feel its not just CL. People will always judge by association. If you drive a bmw your supposedly a box as some few are but not all. If your bag gets broken into at the airport its SAA even though a third party company handles the baggage. If you live at nkandla your corrupt.........O wait in that situation my point is busted <_<

Hell I don't know never saw the need to belong to a road club..... Other than to be able to get licensed, the last club I joined was Swiss and the paperwork was in German so I just signed on the dotted line without understanding.... They never manual thru traffic lights, come to think of it they never have group rides that big...

The reason I asked because surely the club should take disciplinary steps of some sort. That way, people will start to realise that if they wanna benefit from a club format they need to behave!!

Never heard of a club rider being disciplined for bad behavior on the road. Every ride club starts with a safety moment to reinforce the expectations. That lasts about 5 pedal strokes and then it's a bunch race around the peninsula. Pointing out things like the need to stop behind the white line at traffic lights and not in the middle of an intersection is met with derision and quickly you become that person nobody likes. Doesn't bother me but 90%of club riders are just going to fall in line because they don't want to be the odd one out.

This is the nature of club life.

In Europe I rode with two clubs. One in delft when I lived in den Haag and another in Chester. Club rides were well organized and riders fell into single file of their own accord when the road narrowed. I got an ear full when my saffaniss came out on one ride and got told that's not how we do thigs over here. I hugged the lady and told her I'm so pleased to hear this because back home we have a different road use culture.

The irony of local as club culture is that we try so bloody hard to be European on a bike yet the euros don't ride with a sense of road entitlement and they certainly don't advocate anyone getting dropped on a club ride. If you less fit and crack then two or three riders drop back to pace you and make sure you eat and drink. We have a long to go as motorists and as cyclists before we are that mature.

Please make a "concerted effort"?

Why not "Stop at the red light"
