Soft tail of hard tail?

What's the opposite of Hardtail?

That's the one you should ride, seeing that you are on in years.

As for the 26 vs 29 debate...ride the bike you like, and definately dont let others force you into making a purchase if you dont absolutely have to.

there's no real benefit to changing to the 29er since Bike radar proved there is no statistical difference between the 29er 650b and 26er

Sorry Lefty, I just don't agree with this.

A 29er rolls better over any obstacle, big or small. This means you're not expending as much effort in getting from place A to place B, thus allowing you to retain stamina (a precious commodity as you get older  :) ) for the latter sections of the stage.

My personal opinion, for those long boring technical lacking rides, get a CX bike. Im planning to get one for XC races, once Im not unemployed anymore. haha

Isn't a CX bike for XC a bit backwards?

I remember seeing this on the unique "29er vs 26er" debate thread a while ago. Not a huge difference, most of it is in the fitness of the rider, but still.... there is a difference...

I have both and enjoy riding or training on the HT more .The problem comes when you are riding over 2 hours and you hit sinkplaat or graspolle and all the FSB,s are flashing past you as you are trying to save your remaining Skeleton on the HT .At that point any FSB will be welcome .Obviously your own weight makes a difference .A 60kg rider will be more comfortable on a HT than a 100kg rider

Look at something like the Specialized Epic that has a brain.  Basically its a hard tail until you really need the rear suspension.  Best of both worlds.

Blitzer that's an interesting theory, but in my case it worked the other way around. Not hitting 60k's, but just over 70... and like I said, I could not "sit down" my hardtail. The rear end was jumping around all over the place when I hit the graspolle and sinkplaat. Maybe because the geo on the bike was aggressive, I don't know. But I had to slow down just to get things under control and a semblance of vision, while ahead of me a guy sat pedalling his dually without effort.

If you were or are happy with the bike you have why let other peoples opinions sway you?

I'm assuming that the 29'r riders that were mocking you were basically on the same bit of course as you at the same time, how much better can they be then ;)

Well put !!! People who has "better" will always say buy this and get that ... this is better than that etc.

Its all bull!!!  Ride what makes you happy if you want the very best, become Pro first!

I see allot of guys (over weight) then they always try to make their bikes lighter ....I mean really?  :whistling:

I would go soft tail.... a steel HT 29r, that is...  On long dirt road rides, run tyres at 1.5bar, and you will appreciate the efficiency on the climbs. My Epic is gathering dust.... feels sluggish, cumbersome & "disconnected" compared to the steel HT, but that's just me...

Wow! thanx for all the advice guys

It seems that the 29er has less rolling resistance. It seems that soft tail can come in handy on sinkplaat. I can however imagine that unless the rear suspension locks completely, a half-soft back-end could cause a serious waste of energy when you want it to be hard (such as uphill). My Giant is like that – not locking properly when I want it to become hard tail.

What he said... that would be fun. As for 26 vs 29... on a 29 you can steam roller over it, on a 26 you can jump over it or go around it.

Also ride what you like and like what you ride.
