Pedals

Hi Guys,

Im not a pro cyclist by any means, actually im more of a intermediate triathlete, but I love taking part in all the endurance events 94.7 / 99er / Stellenbosch cycle tour / argus.

However a few years ago I have an a fall with kleets and I from that day I removed them and stayed with normal pedals, kleets are just not for me, yes people look at me funny and make comments - that doesn't bother me - I do the races for the enjoyment, I will never win these races.

But something caught my eye at the 99er cycle race, a girl had pedals like me - HOWEVER, she had on them straps, like on a spinning bike - therefore getting somewhat of the pulling effect - do bike shops fit these on or does anyone know where I can get them - I just thought it was absolutely brilliant

Thanks in advance

I suggest you don't try finding them at your local (fancy) bike shop...

You should however be able to get them at Makro/Game/Sportsman's warehouse etc.

Note that these are however sometimes deemed more dangerous than cleats, as you must pull backwards to get your foot out. When you loose your balance you tend not to pull backwards, but rather to the side, as jou try to stabalise yourself

There's a reason that people don't use these anymore.

Stay away.

I'd practice more with the cleats personally.  They add far more value, and once you're used to them they're not at all an issue getting out of them.

Hang on, if you are worried about cleats..... those things with straps are going to do even more damage should you try get your feet out in a rush.

So I suppose my real question is .... what happened the first time with the cleats? Maybe you want to try cleats again, but turn the spring tension all the way down so it is easy to clip out.

I have some Wellego Road pedals they are super hard to clip out. I even ground the cleat down in some areas to make it easier to get out. They work better now but still not great. I would recommend getting better pedals. Those cages your talking about are dangerous friend of mine rides mtb with them. He removes his one foot on the downhill.

Crashed ONCE with cleats.  Crashed 4 times with the straps.

Just.....Don't.

I have a set for you to try out if you want them.

My advice?  Learn how to ride with cleats.  It is just better.

Dude you can set Shimano clipless SPD pedals that they clip out way easy. Worth it to try out again, perhaps on grass at first. I only started cycling a year ago...and it is already 2nd nature, to the point where I'm fastening the setting as the clip out too easily.

Toe-clips or straps is how you break ankles.

Get a good shoe and pedal combo and practice as much as you can to clip in and out. Couple of hundred times with your bike on an indoor trainer should help get you used to the feeling.

Then move to grass and ride slowly while clipping in and out.

Don't forget the most important part of riding clipped in... UNCLIP THEN STOP. Not the other way round.

As the guys above, I agree that toe straps are more dangerous en more difficult to get your feet out of.

I have always been a fan of time pedals.

Also check out funn platform pedals if you don't like the cleats.
