Buy all the time. Postage is normally the expensive bit, especially from the USA. Normally buy things like lights etc from china, cheap cheap.

If it goes through customs R20 handling fee and 14% Vat.

Problem with clothes and shoes is you will then pay another 40% duties on top of that.

Been waiting since 5 January for 2 parcels of bike parts from the UK. Both shipped same day. No way of getting any idea where they are or when they are likely to filter through the local postal chaos. No way to know whether they were dumped by a disgruntled postal worker or sold for tik money. I'll wait some more and consider it school fees if I never see the parts. Luckily not too big an amount, so I'll survive. Just irritating that the bike is totally out of commission for so long. Next time I'll only buy if it is shipped in a way that avoids our local post office entirely. In fact, out of principle, I will NEVER mail anything through our local postal network again. For all I care they can go bankrupt and drop dead. :cursing:

Aaaah, that feels better!

Our local postal network is about to go on strike again...

Hope your stuff arrives before then.

Open a MyUS address if you buy lots of stuff.

www.myus.com

They re-mail after consolidating packages and negotiate better courier fees.

eg. say you buy a frame, a crankset and a few odds....

They will pack cranks and the odds into the frame box, then send it.....

I bought two things in June last year. Because of the postal strike one arrived in November and one in December. I had already given up on the one thing and bought it locally, so now I have a spare. But on the plus side, its so retardedly cheap for some things its worth the risk.

Support Chro Mo - I make use of shipito.com.

I complete the customs documents and specify the value of the content - help to get past the customs duty on clothes issue most face

Also, shipito rates are really good due to the volume that they ship, many postage options available and zero state tax in Nevada.  Also door to door courier cost is a few dollars more expensive and the usual option I take

100%

Stores also frequently ship free to the lower 48. Add a ridiculously low sale price to free shipping to your US address, and it becomes more doable.

Most normal smaller transactions in the US result in the shipping amount being higher than the actual invoice amount - this does my head in!
