So this was a school mini bus, or at least a mini bus transporting part of a school rugby team and family members? Looks like a Merc in the pics.

Terrible all round :-(

 It was a bus carrying rugby players and supporters of the groendal rugby club. Of the 3 that have died, 2 were players in their 20s and one was an older male supporter in his 50s. The 2 cyclists affected are critical as well as a few other passengers.

Just about everything else seems like speculation right now, other than things like time and location.

Someone should contact Mr Dick that made the comment above and make him swallow his own ...... :ph34r:

People like him don't swallow their words.  They just keep producing more.  They are like popcorn machines, only diffs is they have crap pouring out of their mouths and not popcorn.

From twitter

@paulingpen: @JeroenSwart @bicyclesafetysa riders were hit by this seemingly out of control bus. 1 is in Groote schuur & 1 Paarl. http://t.co/vTDh4pgXg5

@kayeman: @paulingpen @JeroenSwart @bicyclesafetysa lots of stories about what did or didn't happen. Let's not speculate or apportion blame

@TalkToTill: @kayeman @paulingpen @JeroenSwart @bicyclesafetysa - according to @JamesCunnama it was break failure.

@kayeman: @TalkToTill @paulingpen @JeroenSwart @bicyclesafetysa @JamesCunnama I wasn't there. Have heard 2 versions. Just hope Linda & Edith r ok

@JamesCunnama: @kayeman @TalkToTill @paulingpen @JeroenSwart @bicyclesafetysa I wasn't there either. eNCA reported brake failure.

There is a photo on Netwerk24.com that shows two dusty motor vehichle tyre prints heading downhill, swerving accross the road and ending on the wrong side of the road next to two mangled bicycles and an overturned bus.

We know the bus was travelling down the hill. Clearly the bus left the road TO THE LEFT at speed, gathered dust on its wheels and swerved accross the road.

The only assumption I make is that it then hit the cyclists riding up the hill as it was rolling.

Sunday Times reporting it was the cyclists' fault? Not good for the cycling community. And rather not read the comments on the 24 website. I just hope it's just the 5% who shout the loudest and not the general consensus. It's like people are waiting for a cyclist error (whether true or not) and then pounce.

A few comments on news24. Read and weep. Saying that, unfortunately we as cyclists should be really careful of our actions, because we don't have much respect from car drivers.

It's scary reading some of the comments on News24. People's attitudes towards us are shocking. Unfortunately there are some of us cyclists who are to blame as many people mention our attitudes on the road by riding 2 or 3 abreast and not stopping at traffic lights.

I think the dust tracks were made by the rescue vehicle that had to crane the bus back onto the road.

That is a dangeroooooos road, no shoulders and hairpin bends all over the place. A person riding or driving on it must be lekker wake up or you end up at the foot of the mountain.

This would have been the bus drivers view coming down the pass if what has been said about the direction of travel is true.

Draw your own conclusion but unless the cyclist were being very reckless it's hard to see how the bus swerved to avoid them?

It's scary reading news24 comments in general, not just toward cyclists. Knucking dragging narrow-minded racists, and news24 are always happy to fan the flames.
