Am I reading this right? Out of 33 000 starters only the odd 21000 riders finished?

Poppd into expo sat and there where loads of unclaimed entries... My guess is the heat scared off lots of people

Anyone use the UberMechanics? My son was one of them .... seems they were quite busy!

Hit a cateye and punctured going down the hill at Kyalami having to dodge a unicycle. Not sure why they need to start so early but thats another story.

UberMechanic was standing right next to me when I stopped. Still had to use the App to use his services. Entered promo code but ordered Uber-X instead of UberMechanic. Cancelled the Uber-X and ordered mechanic. Then realised my credit card on Uber expired end Oct so had to enter new details.

New tube and I was on my way. Needless to say never saw the bunch again.

33000 entries, not starters. The difference is mad up of DNS, DNF, no chip, faulty chip.

Saw more punctures than ever before... all over the place so I can believe they were busy

As far as I am aware, there is no connection between Steyn City and Riversands other than that they are neighbours.

Can they avoid Steyn City without completely changing the route? There are not many options. You could go along the N14, and back to the finish via R511/William Nicol, but that would mean no car access to the venue from the North. They could also go though Dainfern but that would mean closing of R511/William Nicol to the south of the venue. So given the venue, this is probably the best option.

I like the climb through Steyn City (despite suffering up there last year.) It's very scenic IMHO.

Regarding the speed humps, I think part of the problem is the surface. I think if it was tar rather than pave stones, less people would have issues. The pave stones can be a bit unpredictable. Maybe covering them with a rubber mat might help. (This may allow them to be better marked presuming that Steyn City won't mark them permanently.)

P.S. No such thing as a stupid question.

I wonder if bolt-on speed bumps would work? Bolted on for the year and removed for the race?

How about if the current route was reversed? I suppose you wouldn't want the finish to run down Pooks Hill for a fast left hand turn?

Sure. But the 21000 also includes a lot of double lappers. I saw many of them come past me and when I look at the results it does seem like it picked them up twice.

Or am I misreading the fact that there are AA people on the last page of the results?

Did you not have a tube with you?

I only took 1 tube with me. Got to the venue early, and deiced for a warm up ride. I road 20m to get out of the parking lot, and got a puncture from one of those infamous thorns. Replaced the tube, got dress and went looking for the mechanic station at the start to buy a new tube. Got to circle D where the station was meant to be, but they were late.  Decided to some more warm up riding between circle D and circle B while I wait for them to arrive. I thought if I stayed on the tar, I should be ok. Nope. I picked up another thorn at circle B. But luckily this one did not cause a puncture.  I eventually gave up waiting for the mechanics at 40min to my start time and road the race with out a spare tube.

Nice meeting you too!

We really tried.  3min faster over the first 40km of the route.

But the VA's did an awesome ride.

I was a bit slow on the day.  Must have been a bad beer the day before......

The VA and VC bunches had a super fast time!!!  VD on the other hand.  Not that I could make it any faster - I was suffering like a dog.

Well done!!

A and AA are two different groups. A started at 6:29. AA started at 08:23

I know I know. Schoolboy error. Decided not to take it because a puncture means the race becomes a ride and I knew that the UberMechanics were there. #weightweenie

Were you in VC?

There was a hellava crash going down Kyalami Hill, and the details you described here were very similar. If so, what happened to the guy who went into the rain drain and summersaulted over his shattered bike?

Fortunately not VC, heard about that crash. That section is very fast with the bunch going along at 80+km/h. Started in VE.
