Stem steerer-binder bolts torque

Good day all

 

Yesterday when installing my new Pike, I wanted to use my new Ice Tools torque wrench to torque my stem's steerer-binder bolts to 5Nm.

 

I just noticed that it felt way too much for me, I did not even continue to achieve the "click". So I tightened the bolts by hand rather.

 

Is 5Nm too much? Or could it be that my torque wrench is out of whack?

Yeah so I took Kraggie & Cap's advise and tested my torque wrench on my pedals. I hand tightened my pedals with a 8mm allen key to quite tight, then set my torque wrench to 5Nm and I could loosen my pedals with it. Which should not have happened with only 5Nm dialed in.

 

Sooooo I reckon it is buggered, it sucks as it is brand new it has never clicked in its life. Can I open it up to look for a problem? I wonder if I can replace it through the warranty, if it has one.......

Torque wrenches should be calibrated, if it is still under warranty, return it for replacement/repair.... If not, find a testing lab and have it calibrated....

Well it is brand new and it has its QC certificate and everything in the case. I will take it to the LBS'es and hear what they say. I am not keen on the claim procedure hassles, will see if I can figure it out.

noi hasslke, just simply take it back and tell them it doesn't work. Ask for a replacement, and test it in the workshop. It's a faulty product. Let them sort it out.

5nm is way more than you think. The first time I used my Ritchey torque tool I realised I'd been undertightening stem bolts for years.

 

I cross referenced with a few tools to "calibrate".

I had a similar issue until I realised  my wrench has a adjuster anfdthen a knob at the bottom that needs to be tightened up or the click doesn't work.

noi hasslke, just simply take it back and tell them it doesn't work. Ask for a replacement, and test it in the workshop. It's a faulty product. Let them sort it out.

The thing is I bought it online..... so have to send it back and wait etc. I will first let my LBS try it. Maybe I did not tighten that lock bolt enough?

 

I have used larger torque wrenches many times, this one just feels weird. How hard can it be to fix it, its not rocket surgery.
